A California property that has hit the market for the bargain price of $100,000 is drawing a wave of attention online due to its brutally honest, unvarnished listing photos, which lay bare the true reason for the home’s very low price.

The three-bedroom property in Crescent City has been on the market for nearly a year—but it only recently began garnering interest from Reddit users left equally fascinated and stunned by the home’s shocking state.

According to the listing, the property was ravaged by a fire and left “extremely neglected and in very poor state.”

The accompanying images reveal the garish teal exterior is entirely boarded up, while the inside is filled with smoke damage, trash, and decaying ceilings and walls.

One particularly jaw-dropping photo reveals a room filled with garbage, fire-damaged insulation that has tumbled out of the walls, and an array of charred furniture and personal effects left behind by the previous tenants.

Although the price tag—which is about one-fifth of the city’s $490,000 median home list price—may well help to lure in prospective buyers, only the most experienced in DIY projects and renovations will likely dare to take on what is described as a “substantial investment.”

Remarkably, the $100,000 asking price is a sizable discount from the original list price of $190,000. It has been discounted twice since it went on the market in November 2023.

“This home is being sold in its current condition, which is extremely neglected and in very poor state,” the listing explains. “There was a fire inside a home. This property requires extensive renovation and repairs throughout.

“It shows signs of neglect, including fire-damaged infrastructure, and significant cosmetic issues. Please note that this home is not move-in ready and will require substantial investment and effort to restore it to a livable condition.”

Still, the listing urges those with a passion for fixing and flipping properties not to be deterred: “While the property’s current condition may be discouraging, it presents an opportunity for those seeking a renovation project or investment in a distressed property.

“Serious buyers with a vision for rehabilitation and the willingness to undertake substantial renovations are encouraged to explore the potential this home holds.”

The home has become a hot topic on Reddit, with commenters having a field day with the state of the house.

“Every time I stumble across this listing, I have to look through the pictures again. It cracks me up every time,” wrote one.

“What do you even do with that much trash lol,” said another.

One suggested taking a bulldozer to the house and starting from scratch: “There was already fire inside the house. Now, all you need is a bulldozer. But it looks like no one is interested.”

One person suggested that you could purchase the property for the land alone: “For $100,000 you can burn it to the ground and live in a tent.”

Despite the criticism on Reddit, it appears that at least one person has seen the potential in the property. It now has a contingent offer; whether the prospective buyer offered the full asking price is unknown.
