This is the dream: a classic Spanish-style home with views of downtown San Francisco and the East Bay.

Now it can be yours for $3,995,000. The 2,860-square-foot, three-story home in the Clarendon Heights neighborhood also packs in a few extras.

It’s been modernized and wired for contemporary life, and every inch of it has been buffed and polished by artisans. A buyer won’t need to bring much beyond the down payment, because the seller is even throwing in the furniture!

The two-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom home was built in 1926, then completely modernized in a top-to-bottom, inside-out renovation in 1996 and 1997.

“From the outside, it looks like it was built in 1926, with all of the traditional historic architectural details and the layout, but all of the plumbing and electricity is modern. There’s radiant heating, and the amenities have all been upgraded,” says co-listing agent Todd Wiley. The previous owner invested an estimated $6 million in upgrading and refurbishing the home.

“Every inch of this home is meticulously crafted by some of the world’s best artisans,” says Wiley. “There’s no glue or artificial binding anywhere. Every piece of wood, even in drawers, was meticulously pieced together, and every piece of metal—down to every single hinge—was hand-forged.”

The late owner, Henry Navas, was employee No. 50 at Cisco Systems. He rose through the ranks to help the company go public in 1991. He retired at age 42 in 1997 to “enjoy his life and travel,” Wiley says. Navas’ son is selling the home.

Navas’ travels—especially through Italy and Morocco—informed the redesign and upgrade of the home. It features a hand-painted ceiling over the stairway featuring animals and plant species native to California, carved marble sinks, abalone pendant inlays in a box-beamed ceiling, a balcony with tile inlay, stained-glass windows in every room, hand-forged and wrought-iron stair railings, and intricate tile work.

Navas purchased antique furniture from across the globe and had furniture custom-designed for the home. Wiley says all of the furniture is included in the sale.

While the home is indeed a passage through time and space, it also offers modern comfort and convenience.

“There is a fully equipped, soundproof media room, a large library, and a reading room, all with panoramic views of the city and the East Bay,” says Wiley’s co-listing agent and partner, Kim Wiley.

There are two wood-burning fireplaces, a laundry room, radiant floor heating, a security system, and a large elevator. The 2,495-square-foot lot includes a garden area with a mature sequoia tree, and there’s a creek that runs past the home.

“This is a beautiful, updated home, but it’s also a work of art in and of itself,” she notes. “For someone who is looking for a meticulously crafted, unique home, look no further.”
