A marvelous, modern cabin nestled in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains has attracted a buyer after less than a month on the market.

Fondly dubbed the “Tinkerbox,” this one-bedroom, 1.5-bath abode at 5 Trout Creek Road in Kerhonkson, NY, is pending sale after being listed in September for $1,250,000.

“Kerhonkson is becoming one of the most sought-after destinations in the Hudson Valley and Catskills region, particularly for people who want to split their time between the city and this bucolic setting,” says listing agent Megan Brenn-White.

The 1,332-square-foot, luxury getaway sits on 10.9 acres of private, forested land that borders a stream. It was designed and built in 2016 by the current seller, who is the architect behind New York’s Studio MM. The place was used to showcase her work and as her personal studio and home.

“There’s incredible attention to detail in the design and build,” says Brenn-White. “There are these little moments throughout the house that just speak to someone who is thinking about how people live and how they could live more beautifully and comfortably.”

This attention to detail is evident in the fully retractable wall of glass that separates the dining room and deck; and it’s apparent in the outdoor, wood-burning stove where the sellers made meals.

The spa-inspired, wooden elements in the main bath also suggest a meticulous commitment to solid design.

The space offers many possibilities. The lower level features a media room, workshop (with its own entrance), and a large garage. Plans have already been drafted by the architect-owner to convert the garage into two more bedrooms plus a full bath. Those designs can be made available upon request, the listing notes.

Beyond the comfortable layout, the home itself also feels like something that functions as part of the forest, rather than being separate from it. The Tinkerbox’s notable design even landed it a spot in a 2019 issue of Dwell magazine.

“The shou sugi ban cedar siding is something that the sellers wanted to do to make the home disappear even more into the woods,” says Brenn-White, referring to the hand-charred wood. “The entryway has a massive front door that opens onto steps made from timber from trees felled during construction.”

Located about two hours from Manhattan, the home is just 15 minutes to the prized INNESS resort and a quick drive to a number of local markets, shops, and farm-to-table restaurants.
