Dome-shaped domiciles always attract attention. But this one—with its pointy, “catlike” ears above the windows—proved to be extra-popular.

Diane Shaw, of First Weber Group, hosted an open house on July 9 to show the three-bedroom, two-bath home in North Freedom, WI.

“I must have had like 60 people come through in the first hour,” Shaw estimates. “They just kept coming and coming. It got an offer right away. A lot of people said, ‘Oh, that looks like a Hobbit house.’”

The domed, 1970s dwelling is listed for $349,900 and is on the market for the first time. It is currently pending sale, according to Realtor.com®.

Custom-built abode

The 1,980-square-foot house sits on 21 acres and was built in 1976 for the sellers—the home’s only residents. They worked with a builder who had already constructed a dome home nearby.

“They went to see that and then took a trip to South Dakota to look at other dome homes,” Shaw explains. “Then they decided to build one … because they thought they were more efficient with heating and cooling.”

The eye-catching window design might look like pointy ears but is actually a peaked covering, which offers shade and diverts snow away from the window—solving a common challenge with a curved roof line.

Bright basement

A major highlight is the basement, which can be a dark spot in many homes. The walkout design boasts larger windows than elsewhere in the house.

“That’s a much brighter room than the upstairs,” Shaw says. “There’s more light coming in.”

The primary bedroom is on the main level, while the upper level offers two bedrooms and a loft, which could be used as an office.

A new roof was recently installed, and there’s also a two-car, detached garage.

Both the acreage and setting, along the Baraboo River (ideal for fishing and kayaking), add up to an idyllic property. There’s even room to expand. In fact, the buyer plans to build a second house and rent out the dome as an Airbnb.

“The first thing I thought of was to market towards investors, Airbnb people, things like that,” Shaw says.

Turns out, her hunch was right.

“Only one person [who expressed interest in buying] was going to live there personally,” she notes.

North Freedom is close to state parks and a railway museum. It’s 10 minutes from Baraboo, 20 minutes from Wisconsin Dells, and not far from area wineries.

“It’s really going to be a sanctuary” for the next owner, Shaw adds.
