40% of Americans Spend Most of Their Paycheck in 48 Hours—Why Financial Experts Say Homeowners Need To Stop

It can be tempting to spend your paycheck as soon as you get it.

But, many Americans do just that, with 40% spending most of their paycheck within 48 hours, according to a recent survey by FinanceBuzz and Wells Fargo. Another 46% make a purchase to "treat themselves".

While celebrating payday with a fancy dinner or new gadget may feel good in the moment, it could also hurt you down the road, especially if you’re a homeowner.

"This type of spending reflects both financial pressure and emotional relief. In today's economy, many Americans reach payday already behind on bills, groceries, gas, or debt payments, so they spend quickly to catch up on expenses they delayed during the previous pay period," says Markia Brown, accredited financial counselor at The Money Plug in Baltimore.

Instead of spending your paycheck right away, consider allocating some of it toward a home emergency fund. This way you’ll be better prepared for unexpected repairs and other expenses without derailing your budget.

Why is this an issue for homeowners?

Homeownership comes with expenses beyond the mortgage, including insurance, property taxes, utilities, HOA fees, maintenance, repairs, and major replacements. These costs may be irregular, but they’re also predictable if you own a home.

When you spend most of your paycheck immediately, a broken appliance or urgent repair can quickly become credit card debt or a postponed repair that becomes more expensive to fix the longer you wait.

“Every house will need work to keep it looking good and running right. It might be painting, cleaning, landscaping, or a hundred other things that come up over the year. If you let things go for a few years, you may end up with tens of thousands of dollars in expenses,” explains Cody Schuiteboer, president and CEO at Best Interest Financial in Detroit.

That being said, there’s nothing wrong with treating yourself. The problem is spending your paycheck as soon as you get it.

“The issue is that without a plan, immediate needs and emotional spending can use up the paycheck before money is set aside for less frequent but predictable expenses, such as home repairs and maintenance,” Brown explains.

How to make your paychecks work for you—not against you

As a homeowner, the best thing you can do to avoid spending your paycheck quickly is automate it.

“The day your paycheck lands, a portion of it should go towards a rainy day fund in a high-yield savings account. Even just saving 5% or 10% of it can go a long way,” explains Salim Chraibi, CEO of Bluenest Development in Miami.

Brown echoes Chraibi’s advice. She suggests estimating annual costs for maintenance, insurance, taxes, deductibles, and future replacements, then dividing that amount across your paycheck.

In addition, windfalls such as tax refunds, bonuses, and extra paychecks can also help build the fund.

“I recommend keeping this account separate from a general emergency fund, since job loss, medical expenses, and home repairs can happen at the same time,” Brown explains.

Lastly, you don’t have to erase all forms of “treating yourself” on payday.

“A better approach is to set aside a small amount for a treat after you've addressed the important priorities like home expenses, emergency savings, bills, and debt,” adds Brown.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to keeping your long-term goals top of mind.

“Homeownership is one of the largest investments most people will ever make. And how you spend your money today has a big impact on whether or not you will be a successful homeowner for years to come,” says Jacob Bayer, founder at JBayerWealth in New York City.
