If you can make peace with the idea of owning a final resting place, a large piece of land where spirits reside has interesting potential.

Yes, you can buy your very own cemetery complete with mountain views. Known as Memory Gardens Cemetery, this nearly 10-acre property in Bisbee, AZ, is on the market for $299,000.

“It’s a green cemetery, but it can be a multiple-use property,” says listing agent Kim Ewing, with Bisbee Realty, Inc. “A buyer may want to go ahead and continue with the green cemetery option, but there’s also a lot of vacant land available with it … so you could use it for another purpose.”

For the morbidly curious, a green cemetery attempts to reduce environmental effects on the surrounding land. It usually entails natural burial containers, no concrete vaults, and no embalmed bodies.

Ewing says the seller has operated the cemetery for many years and is ready to do something different in the next phase of his life.

While she can’t recall anything specific, Ewing says the seller has experienced some unexplained happenings while working among the graves.

“He has had some moments where he’s felt the presence of the spirit world,” she explains. “There are a lot of different souls here, so I can’t imagine you couldn’t feel something.”

Situated just a few miles north of the border, the property faces south into Mexico and has views of several mountain ranges on both sides of the dividing line.

“It’s in a location where there are beautiful views,” Ewing says. “You could maybe establish a greenhouse, where you can sell trees or whatever families would want to purchase to have planted at the plots.”

And with a vacant, six-acre parcel next to the cemetery, there’s room for development.

Ewing notes that it’s unclear whether he cemetery has to stay. The property’s been on the market for nearly a year, with no takers.

“I think that the grounds could be improved, and I think that there could be a neat outdoor ramada,” she muses. “I think it’s pretty neat what could be done there.”

Putting a dwelling on the vacant parcel is also a possibility. A buyer could decide to live alongside the cemetery and operate the burial business going forward.

“On the vacant parcel where there are no cemetery plots, a person could certainly put housing there and then maintain the cemetery on the other parcel,” Ewing suggests.

She acknowledges this is the first time she’s been the listing agent on a cemetery.

“I was pretty excited about it,” she admits. “I had to make sure I was licensed to sell it. Our other local cemetery is almost full, and we need this cemetery to be improved upon. It has so much promise to be a beautiful location and a memorable spot for people.”
