The waterfront Charleston, S.C., mansion at 13 and 15 East Battery Street was listed last month for the first time in 60 years—and with a $13.9 million price tag.

The three-level house has more than 14,000 square feet and is considered one of the grandest in the area known as High Battery. The stately home comes with unparalleled front-row views of Charleston Harbor.

This 15-bedroom Victorian was originally built in 1845 for the Ravenels, a prominent South Carolina family. The place has had only two owners since.

Home with history

The Ravenels lived in the home until the 1930s. More recent decendents include Arthur Ravenel Jr., who served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1987 to 1995.

The half-acre property maintains much of its charm from that era—with a number of original outbuildings and a fully restored interior that includes expansive fireplaces and soaring ceilings.

Renovated residence

The current owners spent the last eight years tackling extensive renovations that incorporated historically accurate materials as much as possible.

They installed a new shutter system and roofing and updated the baths, kitchens, and HVAC systems.

Now meticulously preserved, the home boasts a sprawling floor plan that includes a second-floor drawing room with 12- to 14-foot ceilings, which might be “the largest in the city,” the listing notes. The room runs the width of the house, has fireplaces at both ends, and offers “commanding views.”

In addition to this antebellum mansion’s grand appearance, its location is among the most prized in Charleston.

The house is settled along the fortified seawall promenade known as The Battery, a popular tourist destination within walking distance of some of the city’s best spots, including White Point Garden public park.
