Frank Lloyd Wright Protege Designed This Illinois Home With a Beautiful Pagoda Roof

In a western Chicago suburb lies a four-bedroom, three-bath abode with a bit of whimsy: a pagoda roof.

The design tower also crowns the two-car garage of the home, which was built in 1965.

“I’ve never been in a house like this,” says listing agent Erick Coley, of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices American Heritage Real Estate.

The 3,408-square-foot home, in Wood Dale, IL, is listed for $519,900. The homeowners had purchased it in 2001 for $376,000.

The home was designed by Don Erickson, who studied under Frank Lloyd Wright. Erickson is also known for his design of the Indian Lakes Resort in nearby Bloomingdale.

This unique build incorporates cypress and rough-sawn cedar beams, plus grass-cloth wallpaper with gold foiling. The home spans 1.5 stories and features a living tree.

The ficus in the living room continues to grow through the roof.

“They wanted the exterior materials to come into the interior,” Coley says.

Naturally, the ceiling of each room features a cathedral effect due to the pagoda roof. (The architect also built a pagoda roof on his own home in Barrington, IL.)

Two bedrooms on the lower level have walk-out access to a sunken rock garden with a patio. A wet bar is also downstairs.

“Someone who wants this home is different,” Coley says. “The owner has had lots of parties here, plus karaoke nights. It’s definitely special. A collector would really like this, someone who appreciates valuable things.”

The next owner will have access to the Royal Oaks community’s private pond, which boasts an island and is where many locals fish. The annual homeowners association dues are $300.

Updates include a new roof, skylights, and sliding patio doors. New wood-laminate flooring was added in some of the rooms this year.

The primary bath was reimagined with a new walk-in whirlpool tub, but the two other baths might need updates, Coley notes.

Wood Dale is 25 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, and O’Hare International Airport is only 8 miles away.

Still, there’s a “small-town feel,” says Coley, who lives in Wood Dale. “It’s really ideal for someone who needs to travel—to O’Hare and downtown (Chicago).”
