A well-preserved and thoughtfully updated antique home in Washington, DC, has hit the market for $979,900.

Located across from the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, the place comes with a separate showcase studio.

The colorful three-bedroom main abode was built in 1892 and still features many historic details, including custom millwork, preserved hardwood floors, high ceilings, and exposed beams.

A few years ago, the sellers worked with DC-based architecture office BLDUS to transform the 2,474-square-foot interior.

“The architect for the main house really wanted to retain the historic nature of the home,” says listing agent Genie Hutinet, of Coldwell Banker Realty. “They really took the time to open up the dining room ceiling and show the exposed beams. What’s really unique is they leaned toward midcentury modern touches in the bathrooms and kitchen.”

The bright and open living room has high ceilings and oversized windows that flood the space with natural light.

An opened-up nearby dining room now features exposed-beam ceilings.

“Next to the dining room is a former coat closet that we staged with a coat rack,” Hutinet says. “They opened up the walls and wanted to expose what it looks like behind plastered walls.”

A funky, retro-style kitchen offers custom cabinets, a seafoam-green ceiling, and two-tier island with seating.

The listing agent notes that the basement remains unfinished, which allows for the possibility of more livable spaces in the main house.

There are front, rear, and side porches designed for both entertaining and relaxing.

“The wraparound porches are amazing, and the yards are beautifully maintained,” Hutinet notes. “They have kept the native species and fruit trees as what would have been there when the house was built.”

The property also features a separate studio that has the highest-level, green-building rating. The two-story structure is dubbed “The Grass House.” Built in 2018, it’s said to be the first code-compliant bamboo building on the East Coast.

This standout, 700-square-foot studio was constructed with clean building materials, including sheep’s wool insulation. The interior includes a built-in desk, floating staircase, and natural materials.

“The Grass House has been a showcase home for the architectural firm,” Hutinet says. “They built the structure to showcase all of the different materials used. It is being used as an office now, but you could turn it into an Airbnb.”

She notes that while the studio has a kitchenette, a full bath would needed to be added if the buyer wants to use it as a short-term rental.

Hutinet believes the one-of-a-kind abode will be used as a primary residence.

“It’s such a unique property,” she says. “The new owner could certainly benefit from the two buildings.”
