Hollywood Hot Spot: L.A.’s Storied H.M. Warner Home Is Listed for $5.8M

A legendary estate known as the H.M. Warner Home just hit the market in Los Angeles for $5.8 million.

The classical revival home was envisioned by Harry Warner, one of the pioneering Warner Bros. Studios siblings, in collaboration with renowned architect Burnside Sturges, according to listing agent John Duerler, of Hancock Homes Realty.

He notes that the home was a haven for movie stars seeking a retreat from the pace of studio life.

“During the time Harry Warner resided in the palatial estate, it became a hot spot for Hollywood’s elite,” Duerler explains. “It is widely believed that he entertained some of his closest friends, legendary Hollywood stars, at the residence. It’s easy to imagine luminaries like Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis, and Errol Flynn enjoying the lush surroundings and the company of their industry peers.”

A bold move

Duerler says that Warner’s “bold ambitions” eventually prompted him to sell the house—a decision that ultimately helped advance the future of the motion picture industry.

“He sold the magnificent property to finance ‘The Jazz Singer,’ a groundbreaking film that marked one of the first forays into synchronized sound cinema,” Duerler says. “This pioneering move paid off, as Warner Bros. continued to create classic films like ‘The Maltese Falcon,’ ‘Casablanca,’ and ‘Rebel Without a Cause.'”

And obviously, there’s loads of history here.

The seven-bedroom, 5,555-square-foot mansion is tucked away in the Hancock Park neighborhood. Built in 1923, the brick home features a variety of Greco-Roman details, including Corinthian columns, a majestic portico, and Juliet balcony.

Inside, herringbone-wood floors, arched windows and doors, and three fireplaces remain intact. Other preserved architectural elements include maple-paneled walls, scalloped ceilings, and custom millwork.

The classic kitchen is outfitted with high-end appliances, including a Viking range with hood.

The sumptuous primary suite features a fireplace, sitting room, and spa-inspired bathroom with beautiful arched windows.

Other luxurious amenities include a maple-paneled film-screening room, full-size tennis court, an in-ground pool and outdoor kitchen, and a guesthouse.

Duerler believes the home’s rich background represents an important opportunity for its next owner.

“I hope the buyers that end up with this historic home really take the time to restore the original architectural details,” he says. “I would love to see this piece of history preserved.”
