Ever wonder how stars get picked for an HGTV home renovation series? It’s by doing remarkable makeovers like this one from the Two Chicks and a Hammer crew, who star on “Good Bones.”

The home is listed for $425,000, more than double what the owner paid for it.

Before appearing on television, the Two Chicks and a Hammer renovation business—originally headed by Mina Starsiak Hawk and her mother Karen E. Laine—worked with the owner on this 2014 project. The HGTV show “Good Bones” premiered in 2015.

The result really is a showcase of the team’s extraordinary design skills.

From disrepair to designer

The house was in such a state of disrepair that the renovation crew had to take it down to the studs, almost demolishing it. Today, it’s a lovely 1,754-square-foot cottage with three bedrooms and 2.5 baths.

But it feels much large than that, because the ceilings were lifted right up to the gabled roofline, and clerestory windows were added to let in the sunshine for an airy vibe.

The improvements also included an opened-up floor plan that allows the living room, dining area, and kitchen to flow seamlessly together.

Cream and white paint shades yield a warm yet spacious feeling throughout the house.

The Two Chicks crew added a long dining island to the kitchen, along with tall, glass-front custom cabinets, which create a focal point for the room and enhance the illusion of extra space.

Among the home’s three bedrooms is a primary suite with a double-vanity bath. And one of the other bedrooms has been used as an office.

An inviting front porch; a detached, two-car garage; and a grassy backyard and patio pad round out the 4,792-square-foot lot.

Fans of “Good Bones” will recognize the home’s location in the Fountain Square neighborhood. The team from the popular TV series often works on projects in the area.

This house is within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.
