Kristen Stewart Reveals She Wants To Quit U.S. for Europe Because She ‘Can’t Work Freely’ While Trump Is in Office

"Twilight" actress Kristen Stewart has revealed plans to relocate out of the United States, claiming that her career in her home nation is being impeded by President Donald Trump, who she says has made it "impossible" to "freely" make movies stateside.

Los Angeles native Stewart, 35, who shot to fame at the age of 12 while starring alongside Jodie Foster in the hit thriller "Panic Room," opened up about her desire to relocate to Europe during a candid interview with British outlet The Times.

The actress explained that she hopes to grow her directorial career, having taken her first major step behind the camera while directing and producing the 2025 movie "The Chronology of Water," which was filmed in Latvia.

Stewart pointed to Trump as the reason for the film's location, claiming that the project, which stars Imogen Poots and Thora Birch, "would have been impossible to do in the United States."

The actress then took aim at Trump's proposed tariffs on films made outside of the U.S., describing them as "terrifying" for the film industry as a whole.

"Reality is breaking completely under Trump, but we should take a page out of his book and create the reality we want to live in," she said.

Stewart, who splits her time between Los Angeles and New York, confessed she's "probably not" going to stay in America.

"I can’t work freely there, but I don’t want to give up completely. I’d like to make movies in Europe and then shove them down the throat of the American people," she added.

Trump proposed a 100% tariff on movies made outside of the states in September.

"Our movie-making business has been stolen from the United States of America, by other Countries, just like stealing ‘candy from a baby,’" Trump wrote on Truth Social at the time. "California, with its weak and incompetent Governor, has been particularly hard hit!

"Therefore, in order to solve this long time, never-ending problem, I will be imposing a 100% Tariff on any and all movies that are made outside of the United States.

"Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

California Gov. Gavin Newsom's press office replied with a statement shared to X: "The Governor tried to explain this to Trump months ago—when this was initially proposed—that his actions will cause irreparable damage to the U.S. film industry. Today’s move is 100% stupid."

Should she choose to move abroad, Stewart would join a growing list of celebrities who have quit the U.S. since Trump was reelected in November 2024.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, Eva Longoria, Rosie O'Donnell, and Richard Gere are all among the many stars who have left America in favor of relocating overseas in the wake of Trump's win over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

In 2024, Stewart told Porter Magazine that she was going to shoot her film in Latvia after facing many obstacles getting it made in the U.S.

"It’s a fledgling film culture there. Look, I’m all about the way we make movies here [in the U.S.], but I needed a sort of radical detachment. I am not a director yet. I need to make a student film. I can’t do that here," she said.

Stewart and Trump have a long history of drama, dating back more than a decade when the actress was dating her "Twilight" co-star Robert Pattinson.

At the time, she was involved in a cheating scandal with her "Snow White and the Huntsman" director, Rupert Sanders, who was married at the time.

Trump weighed in on the drama via social media, writing, "Robert Pattinson should not take back Kristen Stewart. She cheated on him like a dog & will do it again — just watch. He can do much better!

"Everyone knows I am right that Robert Pattinson should dump Kristen Stewart. In a couple of years, he will thank me. Be smart, Robert."

The news of Stewart's possible move abroad comes months after she tied the knot with longtime partner Dylan Meyer in an intimate ceremony held at a Mexican restaurant near the actress' Los Angeles mansion.

Stewart and Meyer, 38, exchanged vows at Casita Del Campo, an eatery in Silver Lake that is a 10-minute drive from the actress' $3.7 million home, which has served as her primary residence since she snapped it up in 2012.

According to TMZ, the happy couple made their way to the restaurant for the April 20 wedding after stopping by the courthouse to obtain their marriage license—although initial reports suggested that they had actually tied the knot at Stewart's home.

According to the outlet, the lovebirds—who began dating in 2019 and got engaged in 2021—said "I do" in front of a group of close family and friends, including "Pretty Little Liars" star Ashley Benson and her husband, Brandon Davis.

Photos obtained by TMZ revealed the couple kept it casual for their nuptials, with Stewart donning a gray skirt and top, while Meyer sported a white top and satin ivory skirt.

The actress paid $2.2 million for the home in 2012, according to records—four years after she shot to global fame while starring as Bella Swan in the movie adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's book "Twilight." The home, which Realtor.com® estimates is worth about $3.7 million, is registered to a trust.

The 3,361-square-foot mansion has four bedrooms and five bathrooms. It also features a resort-style pool.

Previously, Stewart owned a home in Malibu, CA, which she sold for $8.3 million in 2022. She still holds the keys to a penthouse in New York City.

While on SiriusXM's "The Howard Stern Show" after getting engaged in 2021, Stewart revealed that she had plans to get down on one knee. However, Meyer beat her to it and proposed first.

"It's not a given that I would be the one, you know what I mean? Like, with two girls, you never know. Like, who's going to fulfill what weird f------ gender role thing, and we don't do that or think about it in those terms," the actress told host Howard Stern.
