L.A. Lakers Owner Jeanie Buss Snaps Up $4.2 Million Oceanfront ‘Retreat’ Months After Selling Majority Team Stake for $10 Billion

Partial Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss has found herself a new "retreat" where she can escape the family turmoil that erupted in the wake of her team's $10 billion takeover—after snapping up a "rare" oceanfront dwelling in Playa del Rey for $4.2 million.

Jeanie, who, along with her five siblings, inherited a significant stake in the iconic sports team from her father, businessman Jerry Buss, agreed to a deal that saw the Lakers' ownership pass to a group led by Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter in June.

In the wake of that deal, a bitter feud broke out between Jeanie, 64, and her two brothers, Joey and Jesse, both of whom were promptly fired from their scouting roles with the team—while their sister retained her longtime job.

Jesse later accused his sister of treating him like "an enemy" in the lead-up to his sacking, telling The Athletic in November that he had not spoken to her in five months by the time he was let go.

It is unclear how much the Buss family made from the sale of the 66% stake to Walter and his fellow investors—however Jeanie has clearly seized the opportunity to expand her property portfolio by picking up a stunning oceanfront retreat in an exclusive enclave.

Jeanie, who now owns 15% of the NBA team and whose family has held a stake in the franchise since 1979, closed on the deal on Dec. 16, as first reported by TMZ.

The stunning property boasts four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and sprawls across 2,252 square feet.

It comes complete with a two-car garage and two levels of expansive floor plan.

According to property records, the home was initially listed in March for $4.95 million, but by the end of the month the listing was removed.

It was then swiftly relisted in August, with a steep discount. The new asking price sat at $4.59 million.

After failing to secure a buyer, the former owners—who have not been named—decreased the asking price once again to $4.49 million.

By November, the home's new price was listed at $4.39 million. Jeanie ultimately secured the property for $4.22 million.

The large living room features an open floor plan, wooden beams on the ceiling, and neutral furniture to add to the home's beach aesthetic.

The living area also boasts glass siding doors that open up to the balcony that overlooks the beach.

The home is just steps from the water.

The oceanfront sanctuary was sold by Dena Luciano of Douglas Elliman and co-listed with Berkshire Hathaway's Yvette Busot.

Jeanie's purchase of the property comes just two months after she and her family finalized the sale of their majority stake in the Lakers in October 2025, when it became a record-making deal for a North American sports franchise.

She retained 15% of the team and is continuing her role as the governor of the team.

The sale transitioned the Buss family from controlling owners to minority shareholders, with Walter now holding the majority.

Jerry Buss purchased the franchise from Jack Kent Cooke in a $67.5 million transaction. Since then, the Lakers have garnered 11 championships.

When Jerry died in 2013, the ownership of the Lakers was split into a trust controlled by his six children, who all had roles within the Lakers in some capacity.

The sale to Walter was agreed by all of the Buss siblings with a majority vote.
