The Old Farmer’s Almanac has issued its Fall 2025 forecast, and Wisconsin is in for a cooler, drier-than-usual autumn season.

For La Crosse, that means crisp mornings, lighter rainfall, and the potential for an early brush with snow.

At the same time, La Crosse has landed on the Realtor.com® 2025 Hottest ZIP Codes list, showing strong buyer demand in this western Wisconsin market.

Wisconsin forecast: brisk and dry conditions

According to the Almanac’s state-by-state breakdown, Wisconsin is expected to have a “cool and dry” autumn.

In the Upper Midwest regional forecast, September will average 57°F—2° below normal—with 3.5 inches of rain, slightly above average. Expect drizzle, rain showers, and even the possibility of early snow in the north. By October, the average drops to 45°F with only 1.5 inches of rain, a full inch below normal, bringing cooler days, scattered flurries, and occasional sunny breaks.

This forecast mirrors conditions across much of the Midwest, where states such as Minnesota and Illinois will also run cooler and drier than normal, while the South and West trend warmer.

La Crosse Makes the Hottest ZIP Codes List

La Crosse’s real estate market is proving to be as competitive as its weather. ZIP code 54601 ranked No. 44 on the Realtor.com list of the Hottest ZIP Codes of 2025. Homes here sold at a median of $340,000, attracted 3× more listing views per property than the national average, and sold in 34 days.

Other Wisconsin cities also made the Top 50. Waukesha (ZIP 53186) ranked No. 14 with a $341,000 median, Racine (ZIP 53402) came in at No. 30 at $329,000, and Sheboygan (ZIP 53083) ranked No. 32 at $326,000. Wausau (ZIP 54403) followed close behind La Crosse at No. 42, with a median of $245,000 and a 36-day market time.

Together, these results highlight Wisconsin’s rising profile in the housing market, where affordability and quality of life are driving buyer competition.

September Prep for La Crosse Homeowners

With cool, dry weather arriving early, September is an important month for La Crosse homeowners to prepare. To help homeowners prepare, the Realtor.com September home maintenance checklist provides key guidance.

Ryan Williams, general manager of 128 Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Electric, advises checking walkways before the weather really starts to turn. “Fix walkway and entryway areas before slippery weather can cause a tripping or falling accident,” he says.

Chris Granger, vice president of Sears Home Services, recommends siding care before the cold sets in. “September is a great time to use a pressure washer to clean it up—and inspect for more serious problems before winter comes,” he adds.

Other essential fall projects include resealing windows to block drafts, sweeping chimneys before lighting the first fire, and swapping HVAC filters to keep systems efficient.
