A historic home on Nantucket‘s famed, cobblestoned Main Street just hit the market for $25 million.

Built in 1822, the six-bedroom antique is said to be owned by Bill Holodnak, co-founder of executive recruiting firm Occam Global, and wife Marjorie Holodnak, according to The Wall Street Journal. Records show the home is held by a trust.

The 15-room, island property has been thoughtfully updated and preserved over the years. And it has quite the storied history: It withstood the Great Fire of 1846.

“Aside from the obvious, which is that it is a rich piece of history, the home also has an interesting story,” says listing agent Bernadette Meyer, of Maury People Sotheby’s International Realty. “One of the previous owners was John Wendell Barrett and his wife, Lydia Mitchell Barrett. During the Great Fire, she refused to leave the home, and it never burned down. So there is a nice piece of history, in terms of legacy.”

Many period details, including original lead windows, wide-pine floors, and eight fireplaces remain intact throughout the 6,804-square-foot interior. It also has 12-foot ceilings and a natural, open floor plan.

“The granite steps at the entry are original,” Meyer says. “The home’s size, grandeur, and location are very special. What also makes it so unique is the scale of the home’s interior. … It’s not an antique that was altered; it was actually built that way.”

An east parlor features a plaster rosette at the center of the ceiling, while the west parlor mimics its design and boasts a black, marble fireplace and original shutters.

“The interior has all been painted white to give it a modern flair in a historic home,” Meyer notes. “When the sellers bought the house in 2016, they were mindful of keeping all of the architectural details intact while they were updating it. They matched everything perfectly. They wanted to honor the antiquity while also having some modern features.”

A bright and airy chef’s kitchen has two sets of French doors that flood the space with natural light. There are also dual ovens, a wine chiller, an oversized island, and plenty of cabinets for extra storage.

Shortly after the sellers purchased the home, they excavated the basement and added an additional entertainment area, a bedroom, home gym, full bathroom, laundry room, and mechanical room.

“I think the next buyer will be someone who appreciates and understands the history of the home,” Meyer notes. “This is also the closest home you can get to downtown. If you want to be near the core downtown, this house is as good as it gets.”
