The brand-new Guard House on the South Jersey Shore is simply breathtaking. It was listed earlier this month for $11,885,000, just weeks after its completion.

The six-bedroom beach house in Avalon was inspired by midcentury modern design.

“This Eichler-inspired home’s architecture brings the indoors out and the outdoors in so magnificently, and with gorgeous views of the ocean,” says listing agent Janet Bogorowski. She is referring to Joseph Eichler, who developed iconic tract housing in California.

“The home is very unique to Avalon, where most of the homes are somewhat traditional, much like Nantucket and the Hamptons,” Bogorowski says. “This property is a blend of midcentury modern, Australian coastal vibes, and retro Palm Springs.”

Midcentury meets this century

While Eichler’s subdivisions were developed in the previous century, there has been an upsurge of interest in the style. One Southern California developer has even resurrected Eichler’s original plans, building new.

This open-plan home is a nod to the past while remaining very much in the current era.

Designed by Rose Randa of Asher Slaunwhite Architects, in partnership with Judy Betlyon of Social House Design, the 6,000-square-foot property is filled with custom details, including smooth concrete floors, deluxe cabinets, and seamless glass showers.

Other notable features are the floating staircase, lower-level reading nook, and resort-style pool. All eight bathrooms feature floor-to-ceiling tile and floating sinks.

The chef’s kitchen is equipped with a coffee bar and a baking station. Out back, there’s a covered grill space.

“For all its unique qualities, it fits right in,” says Bogorowski. “This home has been the most talked about property on 7 Mile Island since it was completed.”

The location is also iconic: 5 W. 32nd St. sits squarely in the heart of Avalon’s beach community and is within walking distance of shops and restaurants.

According to the listing, the home’s name, the Guard House, comes from its quintessential beach location overlooking the ocean and the Avalon lifeguard house.
