$1.2M Midcentury Home Designed by William Krisel Was Once Owned by Ted Knight

One of architect William Krisel‘s beloved post-and-beam homes in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles recently hit the market for $1.2 million.

Krisel will always be remembered by architecture enthusiasts as a pioneer of modernist design in Southern California. His flashier work includes Elvis and Priscilla Presley‘s honeymoon hideaway in Palm Springs, but his legacy is attractive yet affordable tract homes.

This modest but pristine property is situated in Corbin Palms, Krisel’s first tract development in the unassuming suburban enclave of Woodland Hills, CA.

Of the original 287 homes that Krisel and his partner, Dan Palmer, designed in Corbin Palms from 1953 to 1955, a scant few haven’t been modified over the decades. But this four-bedroom, three-bathroom residence is still in mint condition.

Inside, the original floor plan is very much intact, and many of the elements that make midcentury modern homes so desirable have been left untouched. Vaulted ceilings, clerestory windows, and sight lines that extend from the front door to the backyard all contribute to the open flow inside.

“The design of this home is much more original than other homes in the neighborhood,” says listing agent Gina Isaac, with Nourmand & Associates. “Over the years, the owners updated the kitchen counters and made other cosmetic tweaks but haven’t touched much of anything else.”

Inside, modern conveniences include dual-paned windows, central air conditioning and heat, top-of-the-line appliances, durable composite flooring, and a quartz kitchen countertop.

Isaac reveals the property was purchased by the current owner in 1977 and has been meticulously cared for and owned by the same family for more than 40 years.

Plus, the place has a bit of Hollywood pedigree. It once belonged to actor Ted Knight, well known for his comedic roles in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “Caddyshack.”

Krisel was also a landscape architect and understood the importance of indoor-outdoor flow in his design work. Glass sliding doors in the living room open to a patio seating area with space to dine and entertain. The backyard is set up for sunny California days, with its sparkling pool, mature orange trees, and lush foliage.

Isaac says the property has had quite a bit of activity because it was owned by a celebrity, but it’s also received attention because it’s a Krisel original.

“A lot of like-minded enthusiasts who value modern architecture in Southern California have come to see the home,” says Isaac, who told us the sellers had accepted an offer. “A lot of younger families are coming into homes like this and looking to restore them rather than knock them down. I believe the new generation of buyers are more understanding of the uniqueness of this tract.”
