Neighbors Heroically Save a Home From a Disastrous Garage Fire That Could Have Destroyed the Entire Property

When a fire unexpectedly struck a property in Greene County, TN, neighbors miraculously were able to save the day.

As soon as she spotted smoke from a detached garage, a neighbor alerted the homeowner, Debra Lambrecht, who then called 911.

While waiting for the firefighters to arrive, another neighbor, Cecil Ellenburg, placed a water hose on the house—which was only 10 feet away from the burning structure. According to firefighters, this move stopped the fire from spreading to the home itself.

Even though the garage and everything in it was destroyed, it was the neighbors who ultimately  prevented the entire house from burning down.

If you have a garage on your property, let this story be an important reminder: Smart, prompt actions can make all the difference during a garage fire.

What sparks garage fires

There are several reasons garage fires arise but overloaded power strips are the most common one. “When you have multiple power strips plugged into each other running freezers, washers, and other power cords, you draw too many amps. The circuits aren’t ready for this and a fire can strike as a result,” says Steve Lockwood, owner of Mountain State Fire Protection LLC in Mesa, AZ.

Also, when space heaters—which are often used in uninsulated garages for warmth— are placed too close to combustible materials, fires are almost expected.  “Many people hang out in the garage and kick on those space heaters to stay comfortable during the winters. Space heaters near flammable materials such as oil, cardboard, or cloth can easily start a fire,” explains Lockwood.

Other causes of garage fires include fuel leaks from leaky cars, lawn mowers, gas containers, or just about anything that stores fuel. “Those vapors hit a spark and become combustible,” says Lockwood.

Lastly, Lockwood points out that as of late, lithium batteries from e-bikes or scooters have led to fires as well. It’s no surprise there are now fire extinguishers specifically made for lithium ion batteries.

How to avoid garage fires (and contain them when necessary)

By knowing the causes of most garage fires and taking steps to reduce their risk, you can keep your property safe year-round. These expert tips are a good starting point:

Ensure proper ventilation

A well-ventilated garage will help prevent fires. “Keep windows and doors open for a bit if you can,” says Lockwood.

Be conscious of flammable materials

Don’t put your space heater near your cardboard boxes. Store flammables in approved containers—gas in gas containers and paint in paint containers.

Don’t overload power strips or damage electrical cords

Lockwood explains that most residential circuits can handle 15 to 20 amps. For this reason, avoid plugging in too many tools and appliances into one power strip so you don't overload the system and trigger a fire.

Get a fire extinguisher

“I would recommend keeping a good serviceable fire extinguisher on hand,” says Lockwood. If a fire extinguisher can’t contain the flames, you need to call the fire department as soon as possible. Whatever you do, don't risk your life to stop a fire that’s already out of control.
