The long weekend has arrived, and there’s no better time to give your home some TLC.

There are a variety of high-impact, low-stress DIY projects that you can realistically start and finish on Memorial Day.

These “micro-renovations” can elevate your home's aesthetic or functionality without requiring a massive budget or professional skills.

Whether you’d like to boost curb appeal, improve organization, or modernize what you already have, there are plenty of ideas to get you started.

Top micro-renovations for a Memorial Day refresh

Here are our top picks for micro-renovations that can make a meaningful difference in your home in just hours.

1. Upgrade your backyard shed

Backyard sheds are often overlooked. However, by updating your shed with a new coat of paint, new hinges or handles, a new window flower box, or fresh trim, you can make your entire backyard look new again.

This project gains immediate value through an improved backyard aesthetic.

“Best of all, it only takes four to six hours, and all you need is a few paint brushes or rollers, a drill, exterior paints, and a ladder,” says Rich Lauer, owner and CEO at Premier Building Solutions in Wytheville, VA.

2. Turn a portion of your garage into a mini mudroom

You don’t have to redo your entire garage, but installing a few wall-mounted benches, hooks, cubbies, and some heavy-duty floor mats can create a more functional space.

“If you have children who track in lots of sports equipment, muddy shoes, and/or garden tools, this micro-renovation can be a game changer,” explains Alan Bernau Jr., owner and garage and outdoor storage shed expert at Alan's Factory Outlet in Luray, VA.

You can complete the mini mudroom in roughly four to six hours with hand tools you likely already own, such as a drill, level, stud finder, and screwdriver.

“The benefits are immediate—the space becomes organized and clean immediately where clutter normally begins to form,” Bernau adds.

If you already have outdoor furniture but haven’t set up a comfortable seating space, Memorial Day weekend is the perfect time to do so, as your loved ones can enjoy it immediately afterward.

“Add a gravel pad, outdoor rug, solar lighting, and/or a small pergola feature to turn an unused section of the yard into a highly sought-after destination,” Lauer explains.

3. Create a cozy outdoor seating space

This project will take about five to eight hours, and all you’ll need is a shovel, rake, level, drill, and landscape fabric.

This is one of the simplest ways to add value to your home while making it safer and more appealing during a holiday weekend.

“Solar-powered LED motion sensors installed around a detached garage, carport, or shed typically take less than two hours to install, regardless of whether you select wireless smart fixtures or hardwired options,” Bernau says.

4. Revamp outdoor lighting

Depending upon the location of your existing outdoor lighting and whether you need to use a ladder, you’ll need only a drill and screwdriver to complete this project.

The instant value is twofold—increased lighting enhances visibility and security simultaneously while providing enhanced curb appeal.

“Homeowners are often amazed at how much more attractive their property appears after simply improving its outdoor lighting,” explains Bernau.

5. Update kitchen cabinet pulls and hinges

By replacing cabinet hardware, you can transform the look of your kitchen in just a few hours. You need only a drill, screwdriver, and hardware jug.

“This technique is one of the least expensive ways to update cabinets without paint or buying entirely new ones,” says Eric Thomason, contractor and owner at Blue Nail Roofing & Construction in Grand Prairie, TX.

If you move forward with this micro-renovation, don’t make the classic mistake of mixing too many finishes.

“Sticking to one hardware style across the space means a cleaner and more unified update,” Thomason explains.
