Talk-Show Host Sally Jessy Raphael Is Selling Her 25-Acre Estate in New York for $6.5M

Talk-show host Sally Jessy Raphael is ready to part ways with her longtime home in Pawling, NY.

Raphael, whose given name is Sally Lowenthal, has listed her 25-acre equestrian estate outside of New York City for $6.5 million.

Raphael’s property, dubbed Elmwood Farm by the original owner, has quite a history.

Storied estate

The parcel was first developed as farmland in 1744, and the main house was built in 1860. Several additions were made to the main house over the years, including a large tower structure, a formal dining room, and two porte-cocheres.

Elmwood Farm remained in the same family for over nine generations until Raphael bought the property in 1997.

Today, the 15,000-square-foot, Elizabethan-style manor is teeming with original features. They include hand-painted plaster ceiling moldings, a grand staircase with 30 hand-carved animals, and harlequin stained-glass windows.

“When Ms. Raphael bought the property, she began a major restoration: removing, refurbishing, and reinstalling all the wood in the main hall and staircase. Oil murals on the walls were restored, and all flooring was refurbished and relacquered,” says listing agent Harriet Norris, with Douglas Elliman.

Furnished to the hilt

Raphael—who is an avid collector—filled the house with many noteworthy neoclassical furnishings like the carved wood bed frame in the primary bedroom, the ornate gilded mirror in one of the sitting rooms, and many antique paintings that date to the time the house was built.

And although pieces like this will not convey with the home’s sale, they no doubt contribute to the home’s regal aesthetic. In one particularly majestic bedroom, the walls and coved ceiling are lined with wallpaper by the British textile artist William Morris.

Since Raphael took ownership, the main house has been treated to several updates to make it more comfortable for modern living.

“A 17-zone heating system was installed in 2000. Two septic systems were installed for the main house and the carriage house in 2020 and 2022, respectively. A generator was installed in 2022,” says Norris. The dining room ceiling was refinished, and a new cedar ceiling was installed on the veranda in 2022.

The massive property comes with two guesthouses, a carriage house, a yoga studio, a 12,000-square-foot stable, and a greenhouse.

Raphael, 88, is best known for hosting the TV talk show “The Sally Jessy Raphael Show,” which ran from 1983 to 2002.
