The first home designed by world-famous architect Eric Owen Moss is on the market for $11,995,000.

This 5,467-square-foot, four-bedroom, five-bath house at 167 S. Westgate Ave in Los Angeles sits on a .27-acre lot.

Moss is best known for his audacious commercial—but philosophical—endeavors, including a major urban revitalization project in Culver City, CA, where his firm is based.

A ‘Love Letter to Geometry’

“This home is a masterpiece, and what truly sets it apart is Eric Owen Moss’s inaugural venture into residential design,” says the home’s co-listing agent, Marc de Longeville, of Vista Sotheby’s. “He intentionally created a space that embodies grandeur, with elevated and spacious interiors that depart from the traditional and classical. The moment you step inside, you are immediately embraced by the mesmerizing interplay of geometry and natural light.

De Longeville believes the house is in a “league of its own” and can’t adequately be compared to any other neighboring property.

The home was built in 1991 and has been dubbed Constellation 167. It’s known as Moss’ “love letter to geometry.”

The dwelling’s smooth, sugary concrete exterior is a spectacle of angles and curves that converge into a skyward-reaching dome.

‘Otherworldy’ design

“We call it Constellation 167 due to its interstellar design,” says co-listing agent, Sally Forster Jones, of Compass. “The idea is that it’s a point in space time; it’s an address from another world or universe. Its otherworldly shape is concealed by a surrounding lush paradise.”

That paradise includes a $500,000 lagoon-like lap pool a spa with a custom bench and baja shelf, also designed Moss.

Updated abode

Last purchased in 2011 for $4,120,000, the home was reconstructed and renovated from 2011 to 2014 by its current owner, German-American model and actress, Nicole Nagel. She spent about $7 million on the overhaul, which included Moss’ work on the pool and surrounding design.

The exterior envelope was replaced, a project that involved swapping in upgraded Mahogany doors with a three-point locking system, plus all-new windows and skylights.

The foyer was opened up, and a fruit-bearing garden was installed in the front of the house. Nagel also added drought-tolerant native greenery to the pool area and full-property, surface water-drainage systems.

The reconstructed home has been featured in multiple TV and film shoots, including HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and in publications such as Harper’s Bazaar.

‘One-of-a-kind’ property

Nagel sees the property as “truly one-of-a-kind, like a painting” and says that “being an artist myself, I appreciate the spectacle of light that travels throughout the day, throughout the house.”

She notes that the many shapes, forms, and materials used in the home come together in an extraordinary way. Nagel cites the spectacular pool design as a perfect example of this.

It “looks like a lake, with a lap pool cutting through the middle,” she says. “Each side of the ‘lake’ has different functions: One side is the Jacuzzi, separated from the lap pool by a 20-foot plexiglass panel; and the other side is like a beach, with very low water and lounge chairs in it, framed by lush vegetation.”

When she reconstructed the home, Nagel’s goal was make it neutral—not too feminine or masculine.

“Nothing is shiny, nothing is gold,” she notes. “It is timeless, sexy and edgy.”

The property, while nicely secluded, is within walking distance of San Vicente Boulevard, a lively street with great restaurants. It’s set on the west side of L.A., close to the beach and near excellent public and private schools.

Nagel says the home is ideal for “people who appreciate art and people who like to host.”
