Trucker Shows Off Incredible Tiny Home He’s Built in His Rig—With a Breakfast Nook, Kitchen, and Surround Sound
A trucker who spends weeks living on the road hauling vehicles across the U.S. has revealed the top-of-the-line tiny home he built inside his rig to help make his lengthy travels more enjoyable and comfortable.
Rick Halda from Canton, OH, transformed his 2020 Kenworth W900L into a luxurious home on wheels. He’s equipped it with a full kitchen, a breakfast nook, and a cozy bed. There’s even a TV and surround sound.
The bright orange truck, which Reliable Carriers driver Halda calls his “home away from home,” is outfitted with a custom 156-inch sleeper, including a Murphy bed that folds up into the wall, making way for the breakfast nook where the trucker enjoys his meals.
The truck’s side door is equipped with an automatic step and a screen door to provide easy access and fresh air for when he stops. Inside, the kitchen has a sink, stove, microwave, and storage for food, dishes, and clothing. There’s even running hot water.
“It has all the amenities that anyone would want to be on the road with,” Halda said in a YouTube video. “It makes driving enjoyable.”
He’s also installed a bathroom with a shower.
Halda noted that the side door of his tiny home is one of the most useful amenities, which makes it so much easier to bring groceries and other items inside. It saves him from having to clamber back to the sleeper via the truck’s cab.
“It makes it so much nicer to be able to come out to the side of your truck, open the door, and go in,” he noted. He also enjoys leaving the door to the sleeper open, with just the screen door closed so he can enjoy a nice breeze.
Having the use of a full kitchen has also made life on the road so much more enjoyable for Halda.
“I’ve cooked a lot of things in the [microwave convection] oven,” he said. The ample cupboard space allows him to store vast amounts of food when he travels.
The sleeper area has also been outfitted with an extendable countertop. It’s one of his wife’s favorite things about the tiny home, because it provides them with more space to cook, he said.
A floor cover closes off the stairwell to the exit and prevents anyone from falling down the steps.
Each window is equipped with day and night shades to create different levels of light, depending on the time of day and how much shade is required.
Halda loves his life on the road in his “home away from home.”
“It’s actually put a lot of joy back into my life to drive again,” Halda shared. “I’m hoping that, by the end of this year, my wife will be able to retire from her job and she’ll be going with me all the time. That’s what I’m looking forward to.”
Halda’s trucking journey began years ago when he delivered steel across Canton. In March 2024, he became an owner-operator at Reliable Carriers. He noted that he had to earn years of experience before making that dream a reality.
He now hauls oversized vehicles cross-country in the 18-speed manual transmission vehicle with heated seats. Halda also uses cruise control and a smart light system.
“I tried to get into Reliable back in 1999, but I didn’t have enough experience,” he said.
The company was friendly and supportive, he recalled. “Everyone knows you by name, not by a number.”
“Driving is a lot more enjoyable when you can relax in your workspace,” he said. “If you ever want to get into this business, do your best to join a company like Reliable Carriers. You won’t be unhappy here. I promise.”
