President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social on Thursday that he wants Miami to host World Expo 2035 and he's appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to chair the United States’ bid.

"Today, I am announcing the United States’ intention to bid for the World Expo 2035. The Great State of Florida has expressed strong interest in hosting the Expo in Miami, which I fully support. Miami Expo 2035 can be the next big milestone in our new Golden Age of America," Trump wrote.

"I am appointing Miami native Secretary of State Marco Rubio to Chair the efforts of coordinating and advancing this exciting opportunity to convene the World. We will create thousands of jobs, and add Billions of Dollars in GROWTH, to our Economy."

He added, "I look forward to winning and participating in the Miami Expo 2035!"

Rubio posted on X, "Honored by @POTUS’ appointment to serve as Chair for the World Expo 2035 bid. The event is an incredible stage to showcase our nation’s Golden Age and American exceptionalism before the world. There is nothing quite like Miami hospitality and it would be a privilege to bring the World Expo back to the U.S. for the first time since 1962."

What is the World Expo?

The World Expo is "a global gathering of nations dedicated to finding solutions to pressing challenges of our time by offering a journey inside a universal theme through engaging and immersive activities," according to its official website.

The global event began in 1851, and is now held every five years, with the most recent World Expo 2025 held in Japan. That global event attracted over 28 million visitors during the six month run.

The next World Expo will take place in Saudi Arabia in 2030.

The last time the United States hosted the World Expo was in Seattle in 1962. The U.S. has also hosted the World Expo in 1939 in New York; 1915 in San Francisco; 1904 in St. Louis; 1893 in Chicago; and 1876 in Philadelphia.

Miami's broad appeal

Miami is no stranger to hosting high-profile events.

The Magic City is one of the 11 U.S. host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer.

The upcoming 2026 G20 Leaders' Summit will be hosted by the U.S. at Trump National Doral Miami resort on Dec. 14-15, 2026.

Miami has also hosted 11 Super Bowls, and was the home of this year's college football national championship.

In addition, Miami hosts the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix, the Miami Open, Ultra Music Festival, Art Basel Miami Beach, and South Beach Wine and Food Festival annually.

"Miami gets all of these high-profile events for a number of reasons," Florida real estate broker Jeff Lichtenstein, CEO of Echo Fine Properties, tells Realtor.com®. "First is the weather. You could go to a dome in Detroit, but step outside and you are in slush in January. Second is the infrastructure. Miami is built for this and has hosted these types of events for a number of years. Miami knows what to do to keep the city moving, and it has the hotel space."

Lichtenstein says Miami's international airports are also a big draw, and adds that "it's much easier for Europeans to get to Miami than L.A."

Global events raise the city's profile, which can be a boost for the real estate market.

Real estate agent and investor Ron Myers of Ron Buys Florida Homes says, "Homebuyers like the idea of being in a city that gets global attention. Events like this don’t just bring visitors. They also bring investors and long-term growth."
