A sparkling, white estate—reminiscent of the White House—has landed on the market in Greenwich, CT, for $14,250,000.

Known as “The Columns,” the stately residence offers up a unique design that combines an original Greek Revival mansion with a modern addition.

“It is a really unusual home in that it has two completely different aesthetics,” says listing agent Leslie McElwreath, of Sotheby’s International Realty – Greenwich Brokerage. “There is a historic home that was built in the 1900s that has a Gilded Age style with double porches.”

And then there’s that addition—a striking wing designed by architect Allan Greenberg. It’s a masterful style mashup that includes a spectacular kitchen, family room, and primary suite.

According to McElwreath, the glass-and-steel addition was completed about a decade ago, carefully grafted onto the existing century-old mansion.

“When they were designing the addition, they kept the integrity of the Old World home,” she says. “The columns in the main portion of the home are reminiscent of the White House.”

The seller has owned the property for less than two years and priced it in hopes of a $2 million profit. The place last sold in December 2021 for $12,250,000.

The home is set on 3.7 verdant acres, which McElwreath believes enhances its appeal.

“It’s a large parcel that is incredibly private,” she says. “What makes it so unique is that it is just minutes from town, but you really feel like you are away from everything when you are here. It’s convenient to everything.”

When designing the home,  the owners wanted to preserve its historical integrity while modernizing a bit, McElwreath explains.

“They had Victoria Hagan do the interior design and Stephen Stimson do the landscaping plan,” she notes. “Everything has been meticulously maintained over the years. They wanted to highlight the historic details of the home, so they went with a very monochromatic color scheme. Everything is just gorgeous, and it is in such incredible condition.”

There are nine bedrooms in the main house, and a separate two-bedroom guesthouse awaits family and friends.

And when it comes to entertaining, the options abound—tennis, squash, and basketball courts, along with a pool and spa.

“It is designed to be used as a primary residence but would be an amazing summer home,” McElwreath says. “It’s just 35 miles to midtown, so the location is unbelievable as well.”
