Philadelphia Eagles star Za'Darius Smith has announced that he is retiring from the NFL—just one month after he signed a yearlong contract with the Pennsylvania-based team.

The 33-year-old left football fans stunned when he revealed that he is hanging up his jersey for good, following the Eagles' shocking loss against the New York Giants on Oct. 9.

Smith—who joined the Eagles from the Detroit Lions last month—took to Instagram on Monday to share the surprising news of his retirement, while expressing his gratitude for all that the sport has done to improve his life.

"I knew this day would come—but now that it's here, I'm feeling so many emotions I never expected. Who would've thought that a kid from Greenville, AL, with just one year of high school football experience, would go on to play professional football in the NFL for 11 incredible years!" he wrote.

"This game has given me the opportunity to meet great coaches, compete alongside some of the best players ever, and represent some of the greatest organizations in the league. Football has transformed my life and my family's lives forever—and for that, I'm forever grateful."

Smith played a mere five games with the Eagles, during which he recorded 10 tackles and 1.5 sacks, after he signed a one-year, $9 million deal with the team.

His time with the team was so brief, he does not appear to have ever put down roots near Philadelphia, with records indicating that he does not own a home in the area.

However, for the past five years, Smith has owned a sprawling estate in Sorrento, FL, which he snapped up in 2020 for $1.16 million. Today, Realtor.com® estimates the property is worth around $2.3 million.

The lavish dwelling spans 7,598 square feet and boasts four bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms.

The home comes with a resort-style pool, a guesthouse, and plenty of space to entertain.

Upon entering the home, guests are greeted with an open floor plan and a large white and wood staircase that showcases the home's elegant aesthetic.
