For some Atlanta homeowners who live near Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the FIFA World Cup has created an unexpected opportunity to earn some extra cash—without a lot of effort.

They’re using the DIBS Parking app, which connects fans in town for the games with homeowners with private parking spaces looking to rent out their driveways.

It’s a win-win for everyone involved: Homeowners monetize an unused asset while World Cup fans enjoy an affordable parking alternative to official stadium lots, where rates range from $40 to well over $300 per spot, according to Willy Merlet, co-founder and CTO of DIBS Parking Inc. in Miami.

If you’re lucky enough to live near a popular venue, renting out your driveway during big events can be an easy way to generate income and pad your savings.

But it's important you do your research and get familiar with any local parking regulations, HOA rules, and permit requirements that might apply so that money doesn't fly off to pay for fees.

The income potential of renting out your driveway

How much you could earn by renting out your driving during big-ticket events depends on your location, event demand, and how many parking spaces you have available.

“During high-demand events like the FIFA World Cup, homeowners near stadiums can earn significantly more than they would during a typical event because of increased attendance and limited parking supply,” Merlet explains.

Keep in mind that demand and earnings can also fluctuate throughout a tournament.

According to Merlet, the semifinal game between England and Argentina on July 15 is expected to generate the strongest demand because it's one of the World Cup's marquee matches.

Merlet expects that the "large traveling fan base" of Argentina could bring a huge influx to the city, with bookings taking off the day before and the day of the event.

“Ultimately, both the significance of the match and the participating teams influence parking demand,” says Merlet.

When demand is high, apps such as DIBS Parking offer an opportunity to generate meaningful supplemental income without a lot of effort.

And Katie Hulbert, a DIBS user from Atlanta, is living proof.

“A flyer was left on my door advertising the app, and I decided to download it and give it a try. I was actually the first person in Atlanta to list my driveway through it,” says Hulbert.

Hulbert points out that the DIBS app made the process extremely easy.

“I chose the automatic option to list my space for all available events. I’ve had four bookings so far, since I’ve downloaded the app and made around $200,” Hulbert adds.

Where is this opportunity available?

Atlanta is especially well-suited for peer-to-peer parking because Mercedes-Benz Stadium sits within dense residential neighborhoods that have a significant number of privately owned driveways within walking distance or a short rideshare trip from the venue.

“The city also hosts major sporting events year-round (Falcons season, Atlanta United FC, and concerts), so many homeowners are already familiar with event-day traffic and parking demand. The World Cup simply amplifies an existing need, making it a natural fit for homeowners to participate,” says Merlet.

Fortunately, however, you don’t have to live in Atlanta to take advantage of DIBS Parking.

DIBS operates in multiple cities and major-event markets in the United States, supporting parking for sporting events, concerts, and other large gatherings.

“While demand has been especially strong around World Cup host cities, our platform continues to expand into new markets where event-driven parking demand exists. For the World Cup, we're operating in Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, San Francisco, and New Jersey,” explains Merlet.

How to get started

Once you confirm DIBS serves your local area, make sure you’re complying with local parking ordinances, HOA rules, or neighborhood restrictions that may apply to short-term parking.

Next, ensure vehicles can safely enter and exit your  property without obstructing sidewalks, roads, or neighboring driveways.

“Clearly communicating parking instructions, maintaining a safe and well-lit parking area, and following all applicable local regulations helps create a positive experience for both hosts and guests,” Merlet says.

Platforms such as DIBS also provide booking records and customer support to help facilitate a smooth parking experience

As far as rates are concerned, you can decide what you want them to be.

According to Merlet, DIBS hosts set their own prices, so rates vary by proximity to the stadium and demand. If you’re unsure of what’s fair, you could always reach out to the platform for recommendations.

If you happen to live near a venue or stadium, Hulbert suggests starting this side hustle as soon as you can as you really have nothing to lose.

“It's an easy way to make some extra cash on the side. It’s so simple and streamlined,” Hulbert adds.
