Behr’s 2027 Color of the Year Will Keep You Grounded in ‘Comfort’ for Years To Come

At a time when more and more homeowners are reinvesting in their homes for the long haul, Behr’s pick for the Color the Year 2027 offers an opportunity to prioritize comfort and the feeling of natural immersion without the need for a total remodel.

On Aug. 26, Behr Paint announced Grounded (T27-01), a versatile olive green, as its color of the year, inviting homeowners to bring a sense of organic comfort into their homes—both inside and out.

“We wanted a special color that just lives with people where they are and brings that ability to personalize and express,” Kayla Kratz, head of color at Behr Paint Company, tells Realtor.com® exclusively.

A decade of color

2027 marks the 10th anniversary of Behr’s Color of the Year, so “this one had to be special for us,” Kratz explains.

“Looking at what's happening in the world with trends, there's just this exploration of what comfort looks like and feels like now.”

By that, she means that gone are the days of safe neutrals and beiges being the norm for designers and home DIYers. The new goal is to build spaces that feel like a sanctuary, grounded in nature.

“Everything in the world gets a little loud and busy and noisy and digital. There's just that need for something that feels more connected at home and a space that feels more settled and anchored,” Kratz adds.

The beauty of Grounded is that it doesn't register as overly botanical and bright, but neither does it seem too dark. Rather, living up to its namesake, it serves as a bold backdrop to let other colors shine through.

It gives dimensions to colors such as white, tan, and even more surprising hues like orange and gold, to give you the sense of bringing the outdoors in.

And that’s something homeowners are eager for right now.

“We did some research that showed that 77% of Americans turn to nature to feel more grounded,” says Kratz. “And with that desire, that restoration is coming into the home, with 86% saying that design and DIY projects help them create a space to retreat and recharge.”

Where to use Grounded

Behr offers plenty of examples of how the mossy, green color can be used in every room in the house.

From living rooms to kitchen, to Kratz’s favorite nook of the home, the morning room, Grounded gives a space the sense of submerging yourself in a place fit for the Pacific Northwest, no matter where you live.

But where the color’s versatility really shines is as an exterior color. Those who have homes in the Craftsman to farmhouse styles—or want to replicate that ambiance—will find Grounded as a perfect hue for that aesthetic.

“It is the perfect color to introduce color to the exterior, so it doesn't feel like another white house or another beige house, without demanding all the attention,” Kratz offers.

“It's a perfect complement to landscaping and to trees and will fit with exterior materials like wood and stone and complement those beautifully.”

Pairing with Hidden Gem

Grounded leads the launch of the full Behr 2027 Color Trends Palette, which includes several returning colors from the vault—including Sarsaparilla, a beautiful deep purple—and a color many will find familiar: Behr’s pick for the Color the Year 2026, Hidden Gem.

That means, if you made the investment in last year’s color, you’ll find it pairs beautifully with Grounded.

For example, Kratz shares a concept of a wellness bathroom (above), designed to feel like you're transported into a lush forest.
