Built After a High-Society Scandal, a $3.5 Million Gilded Age Mansion Hits ‘Millionaire’s Row’ in Massachusetts

A second Draper family estate has come to market on Hopedale's Adin Street, the Massachusetts road once dubbed "Millionaire's Row."

The Crossways, at 105 Adin Street, shares the street with The Ledges, the Jazz Age castle built for Eben S. Draper Jr, and is newly listed for $3.5 million.

"Along Adin Street stood a collection of named estates associated with the families who helped shape Hopedale," says listing agent Nicole Willey of TEAM Metrowest.

"Formerly home to B.H. Bristow Draper and Queena Sanford Draper, The Crossways is a 1914 mansion with a direct connection to Hopedale's storied Draper legacy," Willey adds.

That legacy came with a bit of drama. In 1907, Bristow, son of then-Lt. Gov. Eben S. Draper and brother of Eben S. Draper Jr., walked away from an engagement to a Boston society heiress to marry Queena, a New York chorus girl.

His father cut him off, and Bristow took a job working 10-hour days in a Vermont cotton mill. The birth of a granddaughter eventually brought a reconciliation, according to a 1909 newspaper account preserved by local historians.

Bristow went on to lead Draper Corp., the town's loom-making giant, becoming president in 1929 and running the company until shortly before his death in 1944. Queena died in 1949. The Mastroianni family moved in in 1960, and public records show the home last changed hands in 1984.

The residence offers 10,269 square feet, with 12 bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms, according to the listing.

"A grand foyer introduces a series of rooms created for gathering," Willey says. "Coffered ceilings, decorative moldings and crystal chandeliers set the tone, while the 39-foot cherrywood ballroom provides an unforgettable setting for entertaining."

A 32-foot formal dining room, a step-up library, a game room with a floor-to-ceiling fireplace and a sunroom continue the sense of scale. The primary suite includes a marble fireplace and en suite bath. And behind the period detail, all major systems have been brought fully into modern day.

"Hydro-air heating, central air conditioning, updated wiring and updated plumbing support everyday comfort," Willey says. The 2.36-acre grounds are also impressive.

Hopedale, about 35 miles southwest of Boston, was built largely around the Draper Corporation. At the heart of town, the nearly 180-acre Hopedale Parklands surround Hopedale Pond and offer ample trails for hiking and biking. Routes 16 and 140 as well as the I-495 and the Massachusetts Turnpike are all nearby.

"Hopedale offers a distinctive balance of historic New England character, open space and regional connectivity," Willey says.
