From Doc Brown’s mansion in “Back to the Future” to the cozy California bungalow in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” Craftsman-style architecture has a knack for making people feel immediately at home.

With warm wood features and spaces designed for gathering, Craftsman homes maintain an enduring appeal for today's homeowners.

Originally introduced as an alternative to the mass production that defined the Second Industrial Revolution at the turn of the 20th century, these homes are still in high demand today, thanks to their timeless allure and personality-filled craftsmanship.

Nationally, Craftsman homes have a median build year of 2000, suggesting that in both historical homes and newer properties that mimic older designs, this style remains relevant as buyers yearn for character over cookie-cutter housing.

Read on to discover how a movement that was largely inspired by a furniture designer without an architectural background has stuck around for so long.

What are the most distinctive features of a Craftsman?

Craftsman-style homes have a number of distinctive features that make them easy to spot while driving around a neighborhood.

Exteriors are defined by intricate woodwork, expansive front porches, and statement-making square or round columns. They’re typically one and a half stories and horizontally shaped.

Low-pitched gabled roofs with wide, unenclosed overhanging eaves and exposed roof rafters are also hallmarks of Craftsman houses.

“Interiorwise, it’s exposed wood galore,” Jameson Tyler Drew, president of the Los Angeles-based Anubis Properties, previously told Realtor.com®.

“Some of the most expensive Craftsman-style homes sport interiors made of teak or American chestnut wood, which were commonly available to homebuilders around the turn of the century. The interiors were often works of art in themselves, sporting expensive finished carpentry throughout.”

Inside, the homes have an open-concept layout, with an inviting living room taking center stage. A fireplace is usually the focal point in this room, which feeds into a stone chimney.

Built-in furniture, coffered ceilings, exposed beams, wainscoting and molding, and stained or leaded glass are additional features that give Craftsman homes so much personality.

When was the first Craftsman house designed?

Furniture designer Gustav Stickley was a leader of the Arts and Crafts movement, which began in response to the rise of industrialism. He popularized the term “Craftsman” through his magazine of the same name, which was published from 1901 to 1916.

The movement was rooted in valuing unpretentious and handcrafted design.

Although he had no architectural training, Stickley soon began publishing house designs in The Craftsman. Over time, architects including Ernest G. Dietrich and Harvey Ellis would contribute to the designs.

By 1903, Stickley had founded the Craftsman Home Builders’ Club, which gave subscribers access to home plans and provided detailed advice to builders, who would then source materials on their own to construct the houses.

The design style took off, and even became available to purchase from sources such as the Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog, which offered complete mail-order house kits.

He was a leading figure in the American Arts and Crafts movement, best known for championing "Mission" or "Craftsman" style furniture characterized by simple, functional lines, high-quality oak construction, and exposed joinery.

Where are the best places to find Craftsman homes?

While Craftsman homes can be found across the United States, you’ll have the best luck finding one in Southern California, where the bungalow style is particularly popular.

The Pacific Northwest and Midwest can also be hot spots for these highly sought-after houses.

Why do people buy Craftsman homes?

When Craftsman homes were first introduced, they were beloved for their affordability and artistry. Maintenance was relatively manageable, and the intentional design helped prevent wasted space.

Craftsman homes are also bursting with character, which continues to make them a favorite for buyers today.

“The gorgeous woodwork, cabinetry built right into the walls, exposed beams, intact original fireplaces, and wide front porches found in Craftsman homes have a strong appeal to buyers,” Nashville-based real estate agent Jake Kennedy of Compass Real Estate told Realtor.com.

“Because quality, craftsmanship, and community character are baked into the DNA of a true Craftsman home, they strike an emotional chord,” he continued. “Buyers aren’t just purchasing a house. They’re buying quality, history, and a kind of soul that new construction can’t imitate.”

How have Craftsman homes changed over the years?

Because the rich history and timeless charm of Craftsman homes are so appealing to buyers, the aesthetic hasn’t changed much over time. However, pricing certainly has.

Realtor.com research from 2025 found that the value of Craftsman homes had appreciated by 43.7% over a six-year period—a level of growth outpaced only by ranch-style homes.

In addition to the value placed on the craftsmanship of these houses, real estate agent Danielle McCain of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate in Monroe, CT, says the popularity of the architectural style creates a competitive buying environment.

“When a Craftsman home is put up for sale, we’re often seeing multiple-offer situations where emotion is driving urgency,” McCain shared. “Buyers are willing to waive contingencies, stretch budgets, or move quickly to secure these properties.”
