How to Plan a Kitchen Remodel Without Losing Your Mind

A kitchen remodel is the biggest, most disruptive, and most rewarding project most homeowners will ever take on. The difference between a smooth renovation and a six-month nightmare usually comes down to what happens before the first cabinet comes off the wall.
Start With the Budget, Not the Pinterest Board
Set your total number first, then work backwards. A good rule of thumb: cabinets eat 30% of the budget, labor another 25%, appliances 15%, and the rest goes to counters, flooring, lighting, and the surprises hiding behind your walls. Always hold back a 15–20% contingency — you will need it.
Lock the Layout Before You Shop
Moving plumbing and gas lines is where budgets go to die. If your current layout works, keep the sink, stove, and fridge where they are and spend your money on finishes instead. If the layout is truly broken, fix it once and fix it right.
Order Everything Before Demo Day
The single biggest cause of stalled kitchen remodels is waiting on materials. Cabinets can take 8–12 weeks. Appliances get back-ordered. Order every last item — down to the cabinet pulls — before anyone swings a hammer, and store it all in the garage.
Plan to Live Without a Kitchen
Set up a temporary kitchen with a microwave, kettle, and mini-fridge somewhere far from the dust. Budget for more takeout than you think. Your sanity is a line item too.
