Just six miles from downtown Pittsburgh sits a museum-caliber home at 9 Trillium Lane.

The historic property hit the market last month for $3,988,000—quite the increase from its original selling price of 2 pounds 19 shillings—roughly $3.

Dating to 1786, when the 3.6-acre lot was first purchased from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the four-bedroom cabin farmhouse is one of the area’s oldest dwellings. And the walls of this 237-year-old estate certainly do have stories to tell.

“The original log cabin is rumored to be the first home in Fox Chapel Borough,” says listing agent Linda Dibucci. “I am not sure if anyone famous ever lived in the house; however, there was a speakeasy in the basement, where many famous and not-so-famous people visited.”

Besides having served drinks during Prohibition, the home also serves up plenty of Old World charm that has been meticulously maintained by its current owners, who purchased the place in 1992 for $1.5 million, according to records.

Modern meets historic

“Repurposed stone, hand-hewn wood beams, and uncanny historical significance are a few tidbits that begin to paint a portrait of this exclusive estate,” Dibucci says. “The current owners are true visionaries.”

The 18th-century abode has been outfitted with all the modern comforts that money can buy.

Some highlights include the chef’s kitchen with handcrafted cabinetry and state-of-the-art appliances and an ornate primary bath outfitted with a walk-in shower and claw-foot tub.

The main house, built around the original cabin, also features amenities such as a library with built-ins, a study, gathering room, living room with a wet bar, and a breakfast room.

Just beyond a set of glass French doors are the property’s private, manicured grounds. Flagstone patios, covered decks, and a stone-and-cedar barn dot the property. Several historic stables have also been converted to accommodate up to five cars.

‘Close to perfection’

Situated behind a remote-controlled gate, the 4.5-bathroom, conveniently located estate is just minutes from Fox Chapel Plaza, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, universities, hospitals, the Carnegie Museum, and the shopping, dining, and parks of nearby Shadyside and Bakery Square.

“It’s an exquisite, timeless design with superb details and finishes,” Dibucci says. “It truly is as close to perfection as an estate can get.”
