‘Selling a Legacy’: Will Britney Spears’ Childhood Home Get Its $1.2M Asking Price?

Who’s going to be “Lucky” enough to buy Britney Spears‘ childhood home?

The pop princess spent her formative years in this 2,299-square-foot abode in Kentwood, LA, and now it’s on the market for $1.2 million.

Spears and her family moved to the small town on the border of Mississippi and Louisiana, where she was raised in the modest, ranch-style home before achieving superstardom.

The property, built in 1980, is especially valuable because it’s been kept in the original condition—and even retains some mementos from Spears’ time there. One listing photo shows several Britney Spears stickers—along with a VIP pass from the ‘N Sync World Tour ’98—stuck to a mirror.

“That’s original to Britney’s room,” listing agent Yvonne Hulsey confirmed to the Washington Post.

The listing also features a photo of a closet door with the words “Christina sucks Brit rules,” written in marker. Hulsey was told the pop star herself scribbled the message on the door.

Other original architectural touches include wood-paneled walls and a stone island in the kitchen. There’s also a separate structure, just behind the main house, that Spears used as a dance studio.

Will Britney’s childhood home sell for $1.2 million?

Fans who have followed Spears’ story will remember when her estranged father, James (Jamie) Spears, sold this home in 2021 to the current owner for around $275,000 (about one-quarter of the current list price). Jamie Spears had been living there since his divorce from Lynne Spears in 2002 and decided to sell the house at its market value.

But clearly this home is teeming with celebrity significance, and Hulsey says that’s enough to justify the $1 million price tag.

“We’re not selling by the square foot,” she says. “We’re selling a legacy and piece of pop history. That’s how I place my value.”

When asked how that specific number was chosen, Hulsey confirms the seller landed on the price point.

‘Brilliant’ marketing

But is the home likely to sell for that much money?

“Marketing-wise, I think it is brilliant,” says Jamie Camp, a Los Angeles-based real estate agent with The Agency. “Britney Spears is on another popularity high, and the real estate agent listing the home would be amiss to not capitalize on it. Will someone pay three times the market value to say they own Britney Spears’ childhood home? It could happen. I would love to see a bidding war and the price skyrocket.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this selling strategy: sellers marketing a property as the childhood home of a celebrity and listing it at a premium price. The owners of the Port Arthur, TX, house where rock legend Janis Joplin lived in the ’40s and ’50s listed the property for $500,000—despite a tax assessment of just $52,000.

And Kurt Cobain’s mother, Wendy O’Connor, last listed the Aberdeen, WA, home where the Nirvana frontman grew up for $329,000, nearly double the selling price of comparable homes in the neighborhood.

Both of those historic properties were sold in their original condition and included mementos from the former celebrity residents. However, neither of the homes fetched their pie-in-the-sky prices.

But that doesn’t mean the same will happen with Spears’ home. After all, she is one of the most influential musicians of all time.

And the Grammy winner has topped more than just the pop charts lately. Spears’ highly anticipated memoir, “The Woman In Me,” is currently sitting atop the New York Times bestseller list. The book reportedly sold 1.1 million copies in the first week and, as of November 2023, has sold 2.4 million copies in print globally.

The performer herself is no stranger to the real estate market. She lives in a $7.4 million mansion in Sherman Oaks, CA. And recently, she took a loss on her luxe spread in Calabasas, CA—she bought the place in 2022 for $11.8 million and sold it for $10.1 million.

Ultimate piece of memorabilia

“Does she have intensely loyal fans who would travel to the moon for a piece of her?” Camp wonders. “I think it is possible.”

But will her legion of fans travel to Kentwood, LA? That’s what Hulsey is hoping. She believes the property could be turned into a museum that pays homage to the pop star, or even an Airbnb short-term rental where fans can spend the night in the home where Spears grew up.

The property has garnered a massive amount of attention, and Hulsey tells us she has a showing scheduled for Friday.

“In this market, real estate agents need to be creative to get every penny possible,” says Camp. “Like I always say, it only takes one buyer at the right time to get it sold.”
