A Napa Contemporary Home with Cabernet Vineyard

A standout estate on 130 acres in Napa, CA—complete with a cabernet vineyard—just hit the market for $22 million.

The sprawling property boasts two parcels with a pair of bold, all-white, contemporary homes, situated atop Mount Veeder.

The main “villa” residence has four bedrooms, a wood-paneled library/office, fitness center, and kitchen, as well as living and dining areas.

High-impact aesthetics are the name of the game here, as striking details abound throughout the property.

The dramatic “Folded Circles” sculpture, by artist Fletcher Benton, greets guests at the front entry. Meanwhile, two bedrooms are situated in the majestic wings that protrude artfully from each end of the home.

Just behind the house, a two-bedroom guest tower offers 360-degree views of Napa Valley.

‘Looks like a sculpture’

“When I first drove up to the property, my first response was, ‘Wow, where did this come from?'” recalls listing agent Arthur Goodrich, of Sotheby’s International Realty–St. Helena Brokerage. “I have never seen something this contemporary before in Napa Valley. It looks like a sculpture sitting on top of Mount Veeder. The uniqueness of the homes and the landscape sitting on a hill is just stunning.”

The home features a blend of modernism, art deco, and deconstructivism styles, the listing notes.

Built in 1988, the home boasts cathedral ceilings, angular lines, and lots of glass windows and doors.

“There are giant homes in Napa Valley, with 35-foot ceilings, but this one is more reasonable and manageable,” Goodrich says. “It doesn’t feel like a monolith. It’s very comfortable.”

An in-ground pool separates the main villa and guesthouse tower.

“The tower is not something you would expect to see,” Goodrich notes. “It was designed by UK-based architect David Connor and has five stories and two bedrooms.”

Reportedly, the tower claims the title of the tallest structure in all of Napa County. A lookout area on top offers 360-degree views of Napa Valley.

Cheers to cabernet

The grounds include more than 8 acres of premium cabernet vineyards and several wells that provide water to the homes and vineyards. The grapes grown here have produced award-winning wines, the listing notes.

“The Mount Veeder Cabernet Vineyard is at an age that it is entering its prime production,” Goodrich says. “The cabernet is a premium cabernet.”

An updated two-bedroom caretaker’s home is also included in the listing.

Fantastic retreat

Goodrich believes the next buyer might have interests similar to those of the home’s past owners.

“I think it is going to be someone who collects art, or at least appreciates art, and might even be philanthropists,” he says. “It could also be a tech exec with a family.”

He envisions the property being used as a secondary residence, noting that would make sense for a home of this caliber. He also predicts the buyer will be someone who lives in the nearby Bay Area, “so they can use it a lot.”

Goodrich shares that when the current owners first saw the home, they were captivated by its design.

He says, “They fell in love with it immediately and said right then they’d buy it.”
