The coastal California town of Big Sur is recognized worldwide for its breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, and few properties celebrate the majesty of this region better than this cliffside mansion, which recently hit the market for $25 million.

Known as Taktsang Big Sur, this architectural wonder is built directly onto a bluff and offers unobstructed views of the ocean. The 3,600-square-foot home built of glass, stone, and wood appears to be one with the landscape and is anchored to the terrain by four two-story concrete pillars.

“This home’s views are considered the best by many because of the positioning,” listing agent Mike Gilson told Architectural Digest. “You are close enough to the ocean to hear the soothing sounds and also high enough to have spectacular views up and down the coast.”’

The original structure was built in 1968 by San Francisco architect Richard Clements and was inspired by Paro Taktsang, a Himalayan monastery built 10,000 feet above sea level in the mountains of Bhutan.

At the time, Clements had set out to build a one-of-a-kind resort perched above the surf of the central coast. His dream never came to fruition, and for decades the proposed resort’s lobby was the only finished portion of the building.

Then in 1997, the property, which rests on 9.5 acres, was purchased for $1.3 million and reimagined into a single-family home.

The remodel was completed by Big Sur architect Mickey Muennig, who is recognized as a visionary in California’s organic architecture movement. Muennig also designed Post Ranch Inn, the famed eco-luxury hotel just 7 miles up the coast from Taktsang Big Sur.

The home’s interior pays homage to the splendor of the surrounding landscape. Ceilings are supported by timber trusses and wood beams.

The great room and primary bedroom are each adorned with a magnificent stone fireplace. Floor-to-ceiling windows ensure a world-class view of the Pacific Ocean in nearly every room of the home—including the bathroom.

Other amenities include a meditation cave and sunken soaking tub in the primary suite as well as a hot tub perched on a cliff just outside the home.

The property’s 9.5 acres also house an amphitheater, a garden with a grassy knoll, and several walking paths. For a buyer who desires even more, the listing notes there is room to build a secondary structure or guesthouse.
