Former Vice President Al Gore Is Renting Out ‘Exquisite’ Arlington Home Where He Launched His Political Career for $9,000 a Month

Former Vice President Al Gore has put his longtime Arlington, VA, home up for rent for an eye-watering $9,000 per month—more than two decades after he retreated to the property after losing the 2000 presidential election.

The five-bedroom, four-bathroom Tudor-style abode, which was built in 1937, has been in wife Mary “Tipper” Gore‘s family since it was completed by her grandfather. It was used by the former vice president as his home base while he was launching his political career.

Gore, 76, even began his vice presidency in the dwelling, with the couple using it as their primary residence while renovations were carried out on their official abode on the grounds of the Naval Observatory.

And it was to the home that Al Gore and his family returned after he lost his bid for the White House to Republican candidate George W. Bush.

The Gore family’s property was built in 1937 and sprawls across 6,207 square feet. The home features a chef’s kitchen, a fitness center, and vaulted ceilings.

The home is nestled on a quaint cul-de-sac and “seamlessly blends 1930s Tudor charm with a contemporary open floor plan,” according to the listing.

According to property records, Al and Tipper Gore took ownership of the home in 1977, and it has been in their possession ever since.

Upon entering the home, guests are greeted with a gigantic living space that is flooded with natural and overhead lighting.

The living room features chic white furniture as well as bursts of color from the blue couches and yellow window curtains. There are two seating areas here, making it the perfect spot for entertaining.

“A welcoming facade leads into a gracious foyer with double arched entryways connecting the elegant living room and cozy family room,” the listing states.

“French doors open to an oversized deck that overlooks a private backyard oasis featuring koi ponds, a meandering bridge, a brick patio, and multiple decks nestled amidst mature trees.

The chef’s kitchen features light gray cabinets, gold hardware and lighting fixtures, and a white stone countertop.

A door in the kitchen leads to the second story of the property, which has a spa bathroom and a lavish bedroom.

In 2001, Gore headed back to the Arlington property after a disastrous end to Bill Clinton‘s presidency, which was marked by his impeachment scandal, followed by Gore’s heartbreaking end to his own White House bid.

At the time, neighbors were thrilled to welcome Gore back.

“He’s a good neighbor,” Klaus Hirtes, who lived across the street from Gore, told the Washington Post at the time. “I guess it’s not quite like the White House. I’m sure it’s more difficult for him to adjust than for me.”

According to the Post, the property remained in the family even while Gore and his wife were residing in the Vice President’s official residence with their children—having been rented by the politician’s brother-in-law, Frank Hunger.

A spokesperson for the Gores told the outlet that the family was choosing to return to the property so that their youngest child, son Albert Gore III, could finish high school with minimal disruption.

“It’s very much a home to them,” the spokesperson added.

After he left the White House, Gore focused on his work as an author and environmentalist.

In 2007, his climate change activism work with the IPCC earned him a joint Nobel Peace Prize.

That work has also taken him away from Washington, DC, and has seen Gore picking up a number of high-value residences across the country, including a 400-acre farm in Carthage, TN, where he moved during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today, Gore is understood to be residing in a sprawling property in Nashville.
