Historic Garden District Home Has Modern Touch

What a difference a year makes.

This stately mansion in the Garden District of New Orleans looks nothing like it did 12 months ago.

Newly redone by Crescent City Developers, the home on a corner lot is on the market for $2,695,000.

“It was in deplorable condition, so the property had to be gutted to the studs. It was not an easy rehab, but the developers are seasoned renovators and builders,” says listing agent Terrence Davis, with Keller Williams Realty New Orleans. “You could see the potential of the home. You saw how it could be a showcase home.”

“The house was built in 1894, but the sellers transitioned it” for modern-day living, Davis explains.

Architect Frank P. Graveley designed the home in the late 1800s for George B. Penrose, who was the city treasurer.

The property still boasts original elements, including coved ceilings, pocket doors, and moldings and millwork.

‘Above and beyond’

The developers “saved all of the important things in the house like the original wood floors, all seven of the fireplaces, and the original stained glass,” Davis says. “These developers have done a lot of beautiful work in the past, but they really went above and beyond on this.”

The 5,675-square-foot floor plan includes five bedrooms and five full bathrooms. Highlights include a pristine kitchen with a waterfall island and breakfast area, a den, and formal living and dining rooms.

“It’s beautiful and stunning compared to what it was,” Davis says.

The listing agent notes that the home stands out in the area.

“You don’t get a lot of homes that have been gutted to the studs that are resold to the market in the Garden District,” he says.

The primary suite is on the second floor and has a balcony overlooking a tree-lined street. Two more bedrooms on that floor have en suite bathrooms.

The third floor has space to entertain, a wet bar, and a guest room.

‘This house has history’

“The architecture of the home is my favorite thing, and this house has history,” Davis says. “I’m from New Orleans, and I love the history of these old homes. But now this home has a modern take to it, so it’s more for a family’s modern lifestyle.”
