Who is ready to mooove into this one-time dairy barn in Hampden, MA?

The former bovine abode was built in 1930 and renovated into a spacious farmhouse in 1999. Now the sprawling home is listed for $699,900.

“It was a total gut renovation when they did it in 1999,” says listing agent Ryan McDowell, of Naples Realty Group. “They had to create the three bedrooms and lay it all out to transform it into a residence.”

The antique was stripped to its original barn boards and fully insulated, but many charming period details remain. What was once used for cow stalls was converted into a modern kitchen and a spacious living area with a gas fireplace.

“The entire structure is original,” McDowell says. “There are original wood beams that are exposed. The grand foyer has cathedral ceilings that go all the way up to the third floor.”

Originally designed to resemble an upside-down ship, the barn building is said to have been constructed from a mail order kit.

“The former doors were so wide that you could drive a wagon full of hay inside,” he said. “Those have since been replaced with French doors.”

McDowell said the 3,744-square-foot residence is now ideal for entertaining.

“It is really open on the first floor and features an en suite bedroom on each level, so there is a lot of privacy,” he notes. “It’s a big home and one of the most unique homes I have ever walked into. It has in-law capability, or you could make one level into a teen suite with the parents living on another level.”

A first-floor en suite bedroom has French doors overlooking a private deck. There is also a separate sitting area and walk-in closet.

The second-floor primary suite features arched, barn-board cathedral ceilings and a wet bar, all with deck access.

An office space is situated halfway up to the third floor, along with the third en suite bedroom occupying the top space.

Once used to house grain, the former silo is now primarily used for storage but has a variety of other potential uses.

“It is an open cylinder, so the sky is really the limit if you have an imagination,” McDowell says.

Set on 3 acres, the property also boasts an in-ground pool and three-car, attached garage.

“I think the next buyer will be someone who loves the farmhouse look,” McDowell says. “I could see a growing family moving here. It’s a quaint little town in a rural setting, close to major cities, and has good school systems. It definitely has a countrylike setting and is very private and well maintained.”

He adds that the home has three-zone gas heating and central air conditioning, along with a new roof and high-quality paint “designed to last 50 years.”
