A sprawling mountain mansion that was built especially for late Kellogg Co. chairman Arnold Langbo has made an illustrious appearance on the market for $14 million—becoming one of the most expensive properties currently listed in the state of Vermont.

The marble estate, which is known as "Above the Clouds" thanks to its towering perch on a Stowe mountain, sits on a lush 15-acre parcel that is embedded into rock outcroppings—and offers jaw-dropping views of the land below.

Having been carved from natural materials, the manse gives the impression of being crafted into the mountain itself, creating a spectacular visual.

“Its setting is, without a doubt, so impressive the way it is set into the mountain,” says listing agent Meg Kauffman, of LandVest Inc.

"They sourced local and natural materials when it was being constructed, so the level of detail is just amazing. It’s truly a work of art."

Vermont Danby marble clads the façade while Italian marble, sandstone, and local hardwoods can be found inside.

"A design and materials masterpiece, Above the Clouds is one of the most spectacular estates in Vermont," the listing states. "Embedded into rock outcroppings on 15 pristine acres, the setting and views are simply breathtaking."

The property last traded hands in August 2020 for $10.55 million and, since then, the owners have carried out a meticulous restoration of the property, including the exterior.

“Since they have owned it, the sellers have done a tremendous amount of restoration,” Kauffman says. “They also redid the whole pool area and patios as well.”

Designed for grand-scale entertaining, the enormous estate also offers a unique layout that makes it approachable.

“When you’re driving down the driveway lined with rock face walls, it’s really dramatic. But when you are in the home, it has a very warm feeling and the layout is so comfortable,” she adds.

“While it is a large-scale home, it has a lot of warmth to it and would be suitable to many buyers, including a small family who just wanted to use it as a primary residence.”

A two-story entry with a grand curved staircase seamlessly flows into the main living area, which is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows and has access to a spacious veranda overlooking the valley below.

The light-filled interior boasts spectacular mountain views from nearly every room. A chef’s kitchen has two islands, custom cabinetry, high-end appliances, and a sun-soaked dining area.

“The next buyer will be someone who appreciates a masterpiece and is looking for one of the most unique homes in Vermont,” Kauffman says.

“They will likely want privacy and a home to entertain while enjoying Stowe and its surroundings. Stowe has such a great small-town charm but also offers world-class skiing that is the best in the East.”

Other luxurious details of the four-bedroom residence include stunning columns, coffered ceilings, intricate millwork, and fireplaces.

An opulent primary suite has a sunken seating area overlooking a private terrace. The lavish marble bathroom features a step-up soaking tub, a glass shower, built-in window seating, and an elegant vanity.

“The grandeur of the home as well as its setting and incredible views will also be very appealing to the next buyer,” the agent says.

The guest suites have private terraces, and a luxurious lower-level entertainment area offers a full cocktail bar, 18-seat home theater, a game room with marble fireplace, and an indoor pool with hot tub. There is also a three-car heated garage.

“It’s a home that you really have to experience in person to truly appreciate," Kauffman says. "The pictures are spectacular, but when you see it in person, it’s really unbelievable.”
