A stylish Joshua Tree, CA, retreat meticulously curated by Alison and Jay Carroll, the founders of olive oil lifestyle brand Wonder Valley, has hit the market for the first time since its makeover.

The 1950s homestead has been listed for $1.25 million.

The Carrolls, who have made a habit of spending six months in their coastal Maine home and six months in Joshua Tree, where their business is based, purchased the humble home on the 2.5-acre lot in 2014.

They spent the ensuing years meticulously crafting the two-bedroom, two-bath, 1,160-square-foot home into a one-of-a-kind desert retreat, with outdoor spaces designed to take full advantage of the desert experience.

The wood-clad ceilings are locally milled and treated with a citrus-scented tung oil to further enhance the home's five-sense experience.

The couple sourced vintage pieces locally and from around the world.

"This home has been more than just a residence for us. It’s a personal expression of our travels, a showcase of our affinity for unique craftsmanship, and our ongoing love for the high desert," says Jay. "With nods from New England to Japan, we’ve created a property that is both inspired by the world yet deeply rooted in the desert."

Almost every square inch of the home was designed to merge the indoors with the outdoors. For example, the wood-clad ceilings were locally milled and treated with a citrus-scented tung oil to further enhance the home's five-sense experience.

Materials include vertical-grain Douglas fir wood, warm white plaster, red flagstone sourced from Sedona, oversized steel-framed windows, and unlacquered brass fixtures, all with an earth-toned color pallette to offer an inviting, grounded atmosphere. The great room is anchored by the original wood stove.

The streamlined yet efficient kitchen is inviting with its custom open shelving, dark-toned Richlite countertops, and unique copper backsplash.

Other signature artistic touches throughout the property include a stained-glass door by artist Steve Halterman, an outdoor mural by artist Tom Jean Webb, and vintage wooden pocket doors salvaged from a property in El Paso, Texas.

To make the best use of the home's footprint, the original second bedroom was outfitted with built-in cabinetry and a custom daybed, which now offers additional storage and a dedicated sleeping space for guests.

Outside, concrete pads provided the platform for a relaxing shower space with a free-standing claw-foot tub, and an outdoor lounge ideal for preparing a meal and enjoying it al fresco.

There is also a planted garden of olive trees, cactus, and native specimens, and a versatile garage workshop that can be used for storage or as a studio.

Further inspiration can by found in nearby Joshua Tree National Park, which is just minutes away.

This makes the property ideal for use as a primary residence, a high-design vacation home, or a short-term rental offering.

The home has been a sort of residential symbol of Wonder Valley's lifestyle brand, which focuses on the holistic philosophy of using natural ingredients to nourish both internal and external health.

They use handpicked olives to create products spanning pantry staples, ingestible wellness, and skincare such as cleansers, face oils, and hair and bath products.

"The high desert has always been more than a backdrop for us. It has been a wellspring of inspiration and a catalyst for so many of our creative and entrepreneurial pursuits," says Alison. "This home reflects that spirit, and while it’s ready for its next owner to experience its magic, our connection to the desert is far from over. We’re excited to continue exploring new opportunities and shaping our next creative endeavor in the desert that has given us so much."

While Wonder Valley enthusiasts eagerly await news of the Carrolls' next desert-based project, the creative community has been quietly and not so quietly thriving there for decades punctuated by the smash U2 album titled "The Joshua Tree."

Before that, John Lennon, Jim Morrison, Donovan, the Eagles, Keith Richards, and The Rolling Stones were known to have drawn inspiration from the area, followed by more current music artists and actors, including Alicia Keys, Gabrielle Union, Beyoncé and JAY Z, Jason Momoa, Jared Leto, and Miley Cyrus.

"California’s high desert continues to captivate consumers from around the world, with demand showing no signs of slowing,” says listing agent Clayton Baldwin, of Kinetic Properties.

"Properties like this one stand at the forefront of the market, offering not just a home, but a lifestyle that blends design, serenity, and a deep connection to the desert. It’s a rare opportunity to own a piece of Joshua Tree that embodies both authenticity and sophistication."
