Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes ended a heartbreaking 2025 season with a brutal ACL tear—as his team missed out on a spot in the NFL playoffs for the first time since 2014.

Mahomes, 30, went down in the final two minutes of the Chiefs' Dec. 14 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, which his team lost 16-13.

According to ESPN, the quarterback was attempting to throw the ball when his left knee buckled and he fell to the ground, wincing and grabbing his leg.

He underwent an MRI after the game, which confirmed an ACL tear. He is expected to undergo surgery within a matter of days; however, it is unclear when he will be able to return to the field.

Typical recovery time for this kind of injury can be anywhere from six to 12 months, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

The Chiefs will not have to limp on without Mahomes, however, having ended all hopes of a playoff spot with their loss to the Chargers, which marks the end of a disappointing season for the once-dominant team, who have played in the last three Super Bowls, two of which they won.

Mahomes has led the Chiefs to a total of three Super Bowl wins during his time as quarterback, becoming one of the greatest players currently in the league.

The game could also mark the end of Mahomes' on-field partnership with Travis Kelce, who has been dogged by rumors of a retirement since the start of the season, further fueled by his engagement to pop star Taylor Swift earlier this year.

In a statement shared by Mahomes in the wake of the game, he expressed his frustration, while vowing to return to the team "stronger than ever."

"Don’t know why this had to happen," he wrote in a post on X. "And not going to lie [it] hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again.

"Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back stronger than ever."

Although it's unclear where Mahomes will undergo surgery, it's understood that he will spend much of his recovery time at his home in Belton, MO, which comes complete with a personal football field and a huge gym where he can build up his strength for his return to the Chiefs.

Mahomes and his wife, Brittany Mahomes, built the sprawling home from the ground up, having purchased the plot of land on which their dwelling now sits for around $400,000 back in 2020, according to records.

The property spans close to 8 acres—with images revealing that the newly constructed abode features a stunning swimming pool, complete with its own water slide, as well as a large sports field that has Mahomes' surname written across one end.

And Mahomes isn't restricting himself to just football as far as his at-home sporting amenities go; in addition to the field, he and Brittany also added a putting green and a private pond.

In October 2024, the home was the site of a burglary, an incident that he later described as "frustrating" and "disappointing."

"Obviously something that you don't want to have happen to really anybody, but obviously yourself," he said at the time.

Mahomes and his wife are believed to have moved into their home in 2023, having spent close to three years completing their dream abode. At around the same time, they also listed their former Kansas City, MO, dwelling—a much more modest abode that they purchased in 2019.

Per local regulations, home sale prices do not have to be disclosed, meaning the final sale price is not known; however, they put the abode on the market for $2.9 million. Prior to the couple's purchase of the property, it was last listed for $1.99 million.

Additionally, Mahomes is also understood to still own a two-bedroom penthouse in the city, which he lived in before moving in with his wife.

He picked up the place in 2018 and attempted to sell it in 2019 for $485,000. The 1,800-square-foot unit comes with an upper-level roof deck.

The Texas native also owns an off-season mansion in Westlake, TX. The four bedroom, 7,800-square-foot estate on a half-acre lot comes with lots of baller perks—a wine room, family room with a gas fireplace, and an outdoor space with a gas fireplace, grill grotto, lounging fire pit area, large pool, tan deck, and spa.

Mahomes also recently purchased a new $825,000 home in Texas for his mother, Randi Martin, earlier this year, a move that prompted her to quickly list the Tyler, TX, property where she had raised her children.

In a statement shared with Realtor.com®, Randi, a mother of three, explained that the decision to sell the family's former dwelling was "bittersweet," but noted that she was excited to settle down in her new house with her 12-year-old daughter, Mia.

"It’s bittersweet but it’s time for a change and Mia and I are so excited to have a new place to decorate and make a home and now I have a large space for those grand babies," she said.

"There were a lot of tears and laughter and memories in that house but it’s time to let a new family start to build their dream there now!"

Martin initially listed her former abode, where she lived with her quarterback son, his brother, Jackson, and her daughter, Mia, in April for $285,000, however that price was slashed to $279,000 two weeks later.

The mother of three found a buyer for the property in June.
