Rebuilt Retreat: Pioneertown, CA Home Originally Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright Protégé Lists for $3.7M

A 2,123-square-foot home on 160 acres near Joshua Tree National Park has found its way onto the market.

The house, which was rebuilt after the 2006 Sawtooth Complex Fire, has a pretty significant architectural pedigree, too.

In 1975, the first owner commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright protégé Frank Garske to design the home in Pioneertown, CA.

And in 2006, under a different owner, the place burned to the ground. A new structure, similar to the original, rose from the ashes and was finished in 2008.

“It was completely destroyed and rebuilt right after—but updated to current codes,” says listing agent John M. Simpson, of All American Real Estate and Consulting. He is listing the home on behalf of the third owner for $3,750,000. “It’s remarkably similar. They kept the integrity of it. Frank Garske was consulted.”

The home took two years to rebuild, and updates included the addition of a second bath and the conversion of a carport into a bedroom.

The three-bedroom, two-bath home’s design is as unique as its large lot. It’s situated behind a gate and private bridge, and it boasts a water lily pond stocked with koi fish.

“There’s only one of these,” says Simpson. “All the walls are wood or rock, and the ceilings are wood. There’s no right angle to the building. It would be super expensive to build [today].”

The home’s 160 acres means “privacy and views, and San Jacinto and San Gorgonio Mountains in the background,”  Simpson says. “The views are so amazing, they look like they might be fake.”

Twenty miles from the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park, Pioneertown is an 1880s-themed, Western town established in the 1940s for filming. Other local points of interest there are a music venue called Pappy & Harriet’s and the Pioneertown Motel.

Los Angeles is about a two-hour drive from the town, and Palm Springs is 40 minutes away.

In recent years, this region has morphed into a real estate hot spot. Actor Jack Nicholson’s daughter Jennifer Nicholson reportedly put her 10-acre pad up for sale a few months ago.

“People from all over the world own properties here,” Simpson says. “There’s always been a connection between Joshua Tree and the entertainment industry. The availability of remote work has made that more accessible.”

He believes the next owner of this rebuilt abode will be drawn to the property for a specific reason.

“It’s going to be somebody who loves that type of architecture, maybe a Frank Lloyd Wright fan,” Simpson says.
