Sprawling Sonoma Wine Estate With Mysterious Ties to Author Jack London Hits the Market for $4 Million

Writer Jack London's brief and very public life has always been the source of much drama and speculation—from his near-mythic Yukon adventures that left him with lifelong health problems to whispers of a romantic triangle involving his second wife.

But now, a new layer of intrigue has been added to the mystery surrounding "The Call of the Wild" author—thanks to a newly listed property in Sonoma, CA, that is said to boast intriguing ties to London and his work.

While the property on the estate was not built until 1987—more than 70 years after London died at the age of 40—it is believed that the land on which it sits may have once formed part of the legendary author's property holdings.

Priced at $3.99 million, the 5,315-square-foot residence at 3295 Warm Springs Road, which sits at the heart of a 23-acre estate, is located just 2.2 miles from London's beloved Beauty Ranch, where he died in 1916 after suffering a spate of health issues.

Though his life was brief, London amassed an impressive property portfolio by the time he died, having begun purchasing land in 1905.

By 1913, he had amassed more than 1,400 acres on the Sonoma Mountain slopes—a portion of which is rumored to have been used as the location for the newly listed Warm Springs Road dwelling, although no parcel maps can definitively confirm the overlap.

What is certain is that the nearby Beauty Ranch was used as a haven by London, who spent the final 11 years of his life living and working at the property—penning some of his most significant works, including the semi-autobiographical “Martin Eden” and the Sonoma-inspired “The Valley of the Moon.”

It was at this home where London took his final breaths, before succumbing to "uremia following renal colic," a serious condition that leads to the failure of the kidneys.

The Sonoma property played a significant role in London's life, and was the subject of much of his writing, particularly in the final years of his life.

He once described his experiences of the land in a beautiful poem, writing: "I ride over my beautiful ranch. Between my legs is a beautiful horse. The air is wine. The grapes on a score of rolling hills are red with autumn flame.

"Across Sonoma Mountain, wisps of sea fog are stealing. The afternoon sun smolders in the drowsy sky. I have everything to make me glad I am alive."

Certainly that natural beauty is clear and present for all to see at the tranquil and private property now on the market.
