White Christmas Alert: Homeowners Are Likely To See Snow This Holiday in These States
If you’ve been dreaming of a white Christmas, your holiday wish might just come true!
The Old Farmer’s Almanac has released their official predictions for the weather forecast on December 25th and snow is headed toward many parts of the country for the holidays.
If you own a home in one of these regions, it’s a good idea to start prepping your home for the elements so you can enjoy the wintery weather without any worry your home will sustain damage. No one wants to spend Christmas fixing a busted pipe or freezing without heat!
A snowy Christmas set for the Northeast, Alaska, and Lower Lakes
The best chance for a White Christmas this year lies with homeowners living as far north as possible. States like Montana, North Dakota, and Minnesota are all set to see snow in the last days of December.
Same goes for states like Maine, New Hampshire, and parts of New York state, though New York City and the tristate area—including New Jersey and Connecticut—won’t be seeing a single flake.
In fact, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, most of the country will be seeing a milder, gentler winter than average through to 2026.
A few other places have a chance of a white Christmas: states near the Appalachians, parts of the Ohio Valley, and the Upper Midwest could see a small snow shower or two.
But if you live in the Pacific Northwest or Southwest, the Deep South, or the Heartland, the chance of seeing snow is decidedly zero. But hey, if you’ve sticking around places like Florida or Hawaii for the holidays, it’s a safe bet you were trying to avoid winter weather anyway!
Preparing your home for a snowy Christmas
With just a few more sleeps until the big holiday, homeowners should consider prioritizing winterizing their home, regardless of the forecast.
Even without snow, elements like frigid temperatures and forceful winds can wreak havoc on your home and could find homeowners facing costly repairs if they’re not careful.
But it gets too cold outside, consider a few simple projects to ward your home from winter weather.
The mostly costly mistake a homeowner makes during the winter months is neglecting their pipes. Frozen pipes can quickly put your whole house out of commission, and then be pricey to fix.
Make sure you shut off the water to all external sources and disconnect any hoses. Protect outdoor plumbing fixtures and make sure you’re using all the faucets in your home. Moving water through the pipes keeps them functional.
To that end, make sure you’ve got your heat going, even when you’re not home. If you are taking an extended holiday, set the thermostat to a minimum of 50 degrees.
A portable generator will be a lifesaver if you lose power during a winter storm, and it’s much better to make sure yours will fire up and generate power when you most need it before a storm actually hits.
During the winter months, windows become a prime spot for energy loss. Jump on social media and everyone will show you their trick of checking if your windows need sealing, so give them a quick check to make sure the heat is staying in your house.
And lastly, take a walk around your house to check all the outside elements: gutters for ice dams, precarious trees with limbs that could hit the house, and check the roof for shingles that may need replacing.
