A showstopping Tudor in Newport, RI, has reappeared on the market—this time with a $1.3 million price cut.

The magnificent Gilded Age mansion was originally offered for $6.5 million in March, but it’s available now for $5.2 million.

This nine-bedroom estate was built in 1900 by architect J.D. Johnston. Known as Ivy Tower, the 7,373-square-foot historic gem sits at the south end of prominent Bellevue Avenue.

One of a kind

“The home is, overall, one of a kind,” says listing agent Marlen Oliva, of the Fitzpatrick Team Re/Max. “It really represents the Gilded Age, with its exterior and interior. All of the rooms have decorative ceilings and walls that you only see in mansions like Rosecliff,” she adds, referring to the Newport landmark.

A gated front entry leads to a circular driveway.

Eight fireplaces, exposed-beam ceilings, restored hardwood floors, stained-glass windows, and built-in bookcases give the place unrivaled historic charm.

“There is a library that is long and elegant with hardwood floors, a fireplace, and lots of built-in shelving,” Oliva says.

A cozy reading nook with built-in seating and a wood-burning fireplace is situated just off the kitchen.

“The dining room is formal and has a fireplace, decorative ceilings, and a lot of light,” Oliva notes.

A nearby skylit sunroom opens to a spacious back deck, which overlooks the private backyard.

Perfectly preserved

The home’s rich history is evident in every room and remains intact, thanks to the sellers’ painstaking efforts.

“From the walls to the ceilings, everything has been preserved—even the colors of the home,” Oliva explains. “They did not want to take away from the home, so it has been more of a preservation than a renovation, keeping what was there. It’s not something you see very often.”

She believes the next buyer will be someone who enjoys the Newport vibe, adding that many of the neighboring homes are summer retreats, while others have become primary residences over the years.

“I think [the buyer] will also love history and the luxury lifestyle,” Oliva says. “The house is a real experience. I envision someone buying it who likes the luxurious aspect of the exterior and wants to preserve the historic charm of the home’s interior.”

The 1.1-acre lot also features a full-size, clay tennis court; pool; lush gardens; a terrace; and bluestone patios.

“It could be used as a full-time, primary residence,” Oliva notes. “It was originally the sellers’ secondary home. They would travel to Europe in the winter; but as they got older, they decided to stay put.”
